The Water Alarm also has a 6-foot sensor wire, so that you can extend the sensor into a sump pump, or the alarm will sound before water spills out onto the floor. The alarm plugs into the wall plus has a 9 Volt battery backup. We use ours for the sump pump & it works wonderfully!
When the alarm goes off...we pull up on the sump pump floater string & the sump pump starts right away and the alarm turns off right away.
The alarm is loud. Our house is a ranch style, a bit over 1,100 sq ft...the sump pump is in the basement...opposite corner than our bedrooms on the main floor...I could still hear the alarm going off in the middle of the night.
This item works as it says it will, I'd purchase this item again. We purchased our's at a major hardware store in our area for about $10

Water damage is one of the main ways that the value of a home can be diminished.Accidents will happen!Water heaters break down and water pours out, washing machines overflow, pipes wear thin and leak - and when these things happen, water will start to destroy your home.Perhaps the most dangerous aspect of water damage is that it can occur with almost no sound - you may not know you have a leak until your basement is flooded! Now, you can minimize the risk of water damage with this Water Alarm. The Water Alarm requires only a 9-volt battery (battery not included), and when placed on the floor it can detect water that is only 1/32"deep!This is thanks to solid state circuitry which is highly reliable. The Water Alarm also has a 6-foot sensor wire, so that you can extend it into a sump pump, or simply mount it on a wall to stretch it to another location.Plus, up to an additional 200 feet of wire can easily be spliced in to provide extra length. When the Water Alarm detects water it emits a loud 110 decibel alarm (as loud as most car horns)! And don't worry that you will miss this alarm if you are out of the house when water is first detected - the Water Alarm will sound continuously for 2-3 days (depending on existing battery life).Consider one for the basement, one for the kitchen, the bathroom, or anywhere that water may become a hazard.Keep your home safe and secure with the Water Alarm. Assembly level/degree of difficulty: No Assembly Required.

General Tools WA500 Water Leak Alarm Review

I use this in my basement near my 15 year old water heater. Had it about one month when I woke up to hear beeping coming from the basement. I rushed down only to find the unit sitting on a dry floor. Maybe the humidity in the basement caused it though I do have a dehumidifier running. I reset the unit and it has been working ok since. On the plus side, the unit was loud enough for me to hear on the main floor of my house so I am happy about that.
UPDATE - 12/9/2009 - after 2 more false alarms in the past few weeks I'm about ready to give up on this unit. It is definitely more of a nuisance than it is a help. It does have a great alarm though that can be heard well throughout my house, but I'm getting tired of rushing down the basement only to find it sitting there screeching away to a dry floor.

Will NOT WORK alone. You also HAVE to buy the control panel for this thing to work. It cost another @ $20 bucks.

The GE 45133 Choice Alert Wireless Water Leak/Flood Sensor warns you of leaks or possible flooding that can lead to costly water damage. You can use this sensor to monitor areas of your home where there's a risk of water leaks, such as near washing machines, dishwashers, air conditioners, hot water tanks, plumbing lines, and more. The compact GE 45133 Water Leak Sensor runs off a single lithium battery that can power the sensor for up to 24 months.
Note: The sensor must be used with the GE 45129 Wireless Control Center or the GE 45142 Choice Alert Starter Kit (each sold separately). The GE 45133 Water Leak Sensor can work alongside other wireless Choice Alert components as part of a GE Choice Alert Wireless Alarm System.
Part of the GE Choice Alert Wireless Alarm SystemThe GE 45133 Water Leak Sensor is part of the GE Choice Alert Wireless Alarm System line of products. Cost-effective and easy to install, Choice Alert components offer wireless operation, multi-zone coverage, home and away settings, all-weather function, and expandability for complete home protection.
With wireless capabilities, Choice Alert products require no complicated wiring, drilling or expensive installation costs. And because they are designed to be part of a self-contained system, there are no monthly usage charges. System components are simple enough for anyone to use, and they can be combined to provide a customized blanket of protection over your entire property.
Wireless Control Center for Sensor MonitoringThe entire Choice Alert Security System is designed around the Wireless Control Center, the system's hub. The Control Center monitors each and every sensor that is wirelessly connected to it. As many as four sensors can be programmed in each of four zones, giving you the security of up to 16 sensors to guard your entire home, including sensors for doors, windows, gates, water leaks, and motion detection.
The Wireless Control Center allows you to secure your system with a custom four-digit code that can be changed at any time. Plus, the center lets you control many system features. For example, you can select 'Home' mode for an instant alarm and 'Away' mode for a delayed alarm. In addition to the armed alarm system, the Control Center also offers a visible and audible Zone Notification alert system (with a choice of continuous alert or single chime mode) and a dedicated alert zone (Zone 4). The center wirelessly transmits and receives signals up to 150 feet.
Additionally, the Wireless Control Center features a low-battery indicator that will alert you when battery power is low in a specific zone, so you'll know exactly when to replace the batteries in every one of your components.
Combine Components for Total Home CoverageIn addition to the Water Leak Sensor, there are several components available for use with the Wireless Control Center, including a door/window sensor, a motion detector, a secondary audio alarm siren, a signal repeater (for enhanced wireless range), a garage door sensor, and a Silent Alert LED indicator. Add up to 16 sensors and give yourself the peace of mind that only a complete home protection can provide.
Water Leak Sensor Quickly Diagnoses SeepageWith the GE 45133 Water Leak Sensor, costly water damage is a thing of the past. The 45133 will instantly detect water leaks with its probe, and it will report information back to the Choice Alert Wireless Control Center (sold separately) from up to 150 feet away. Determining a potential water leak before it causes costly damage is what makes the GE 45133 such a sensible and cost-effective component to add to your Choice Alert Security System.
Compact Sensor Is Easy to Install AnywhereInstall the GE 45133 Choice Alert Sensor anywhere that has the potential for water leaks, such as near a dishwasher, under the sink, by the water heater, or any other area that is at risk of water damage. Installation couldn't be easier; simply mount the sensor with the probe pointed down using either screws or double-sided tape (both included), and it will detect water accumulating in that area. Like all Choice Alert sensors, the GE 45133 Water Leak Sensor is wireless and will only function with the Choice Alert Wireless Control Center (sold separately).
This compact sensor weighs less than four ounces, and it's backed by a one-year limited warranty.

Sonin 00700 Water Alarm with Remote Sensor Review

Sonin 00700 Water Alarm with Remote Sensor

I bought this about 2 years ago to detect a leak from my water heater. Well, today I noticed wet carpet outside the closet where the water heater is but no alarm had gone off. I pressed the test button and it went off as expected. I then set the sensor in a pool of water and nothing. I Replaced the battery and tried again. Nothing. So the product doesn't do the one thing it's designed to do. Look elsewhere.

Zircon Leak Alert Electronic Water Detector, 1-Pack Review

Zircon Leak Alert Electronic Water Detector, 1-Pack

After having our basement flood, we purchased this product. This product has done a good job of letting us know of any impending problems. It will not make the problem go away but is a great warning device. It is small and inconspicous. It works basically like a smoke detector but for water. The only requirement is that the device must come in contact with the offending water. We have placed ours in the sump pump pit on a ledge instead of outside the pit on the floor because by then it would be too late:)

The first step to preventing water damage to your home is finding out when and where the water is entering the house. That’s often easier said than done, unless you’ve installed the Zircon 64003 Water Detector Electronic Water Alarm. For less than you’d pay for two fast-food meals, you could buy yourself year-round protection and peace of mind—and possibly prevent thousands of dollars in water damage, not to mention increases in your homeowner’s insurance.
The battery-operated unit has an automatic sensor that emits a loud, piercing alarm—similar to a smoke detector’s—when it comes in contact with water. Simply place the alarm near a washing machine, inside of a sump pump pit, on floor of a basement or crawlspace, or wherever you suspect water entry. This compact, set-it-and-forget-it alarm is only slightly larger than a deck of cards, and it’s powered by a 9-volt battery (not included). -- Joseph Truini
