(More customer reviews)I had to replace the old rusty Intermatic timer for the pool motor, and came across this SA310 model. This is the nicest low cost digital model that I found. After using it for a couple months it works great! The buttons feel nice and overall has a well-built solid feel to the unit. I think this will last for many years. However there is one thing I wish it had (the reason for 4 stars on the review instead of 5): you can set 4 different custom timers, but you can only choose one of these modes at a time so the device will only turn on and off one time per day. In other words you can't turn something on at 2pm turn it off at 3pm then back on again at 5 pm and off again at 6pm. That's impossible with this unit; instead there's only one on/off cycle, but you can manually switch between 4 of these cycles (plus the zip set and random settings). Other than this minor gripe about this missing feature, it is a wonderful timer.

It operates a single on/off cycle during a 24-hour period, which is adjustable, requires 230 volts for operation and switches both poles (hot wires). My original timer finally expired after more than 30 years of use, so I bought this replacement from Amazon, which was less expensive than buying one from my local electrical distributor.
Fortunately, this new mechanism fits and snaps right into the old Intermatic housing. For those who just need to replace the functional parts, this greatly simplifies the installation. Amazon's price for the entire timer assembly including the metal housing was less than others charge for just the mechanism itsef.
It was shipped promptly, arrived undamaged and at a good price.

(More customer reviews)What was not clear to me when I bought this product was that it does not turn off at Sunrise. Basically the way it works is that it will turn on at Sunset. You then have to tell it how many hours you want it to stay on after Sunset. This means the lights are either staying on too long or not long enough. It does not have the ability to turn off at Sunrise. I wish I knew this before I purchased. I would recommend if you want something that turns off at Sunrise to get the Aube by Honeywell TI044/U Solar Programmable Timer. The only plus for the Sylvania is that you only need to enter in your area code. Other ones you need to know you latitude and longitude.

(More customer reviews)I bought this timer to control my water heater. The unit itself appears attractive & reasonably well-constructed. However, the instructions are quite confusing and not at all user-friendly. Neither do the timing functions make sense. For some unknown reason, using the Zip-Set feature requires setting the clock to U.S. Eastern Time rather than your local time. This makes setting all subsequent on-off times confusing. Far worse--each of the 4 programmable timers seems to allow only 1 on and 1 off setting, forcing you to choose between 7-day, weekday, or weekend mode for that timer, with only 1 on/off option for it. Worse still, only one timer can be active at any given time, so you have to manually switch from one timer to another to activate the one you want next. I spent a couple of hours with a voltmeter programming & experimenting, so I'm confident this is correct. If anyone can correct me, I'd be delighted to be wrong. In other words, to set up, say, a morning on/off plus an afternoon on/off, with different set times for weekday and weekend, would require using all 4 timers AND you'd have to manually switch timers twice a day. The only way to "set and forget" is to pick 1 timer, set it on 7-day mode, program in 1 on/off time, and then use manual override for any other times you might want to heat water. If that's good enough for you, then buy this unit. Otherwise, find another. Given the hours of frustration I experienced, plus the poor result, I would have never bought this unit if I had known how it operated.

Mine had high marks for the easy things- insulation, updated windows, weather stripping, etc. But my water heater- I cannot install the 'tankless', because I have no chimney. It has always been electric, but keeping 55 gallons hot all 24 hours is not efficient. So I ordered the Intermatic, and once installed outside the breaker panel, found it to be as easy to operate as a setback thermostat.
You can set it to heat up prior to morning showers, then (on weekdays) turn the power off, and heat up again in time for evening meals, cleaning, etc. Weekends can be an entirely different schedule. There is even a 'shutoff' feature to bypass the schedule while you take vacation. Instructions are clear, and programmed from the front.
I feel this is saving money (and more still when we get Time-of-Day pricing).

Important, when you take the insides out to mount, this is done by depressing the spring clip on top, and lift and pull out. Reassembly is reverse, but you have to make sure the side/bottom edges are behind the stops. If your not back and down all the way, the insides will seem loose and the timer will/could make noise, has you may read about in other reviews.
Our timer has not been mounted and running long enough to figure the savings, ours is set to run two hours in the morning and two hours in the evening. Our water heater, stays hot all day, every time we use water we got hot water all day and night when it is off mode. I am sure this will show great savings!!

Intermatic WH21 Electric Water Heater Timer Review

You should have some background in electrical ampacity and wiring basics.
I did have to purchase an additional pigtail.(flex tubing with 3 #10 color coded wires, and 1/2 connectors on each end about 5 feet total length)
The heater had the wiring flex tubing direct from the wall to the top of the heater. The additional material was about 10.75 at the local hardware store.
I unhooked the wiring from the heater and wired it to the timer, then wired the new pigtail to where I had disconnected the original wires.
The timer has knockouts on the bottom for either 1/2 or 3/4 inch connectors so if it will accomodate either one. You most likely will have 1/2" connections.
Make sure you turn off the breaker before you start.
The entire process took about an hour total.
The instructions that come with the timer aren't that great, so if you don't know what you are doing, it won't help much.
The timer comes with 3 sets of on/off clips so you can time it on and off 3 times.
We set it at on at 5 am, off at 8 am, then on at 8 pm off at 10 pm.
So the timer is on 5 hours a day and off 19.
We figgure we will save around 25 dollars a month off the electric bill.
So... it will take at least 2 months to pay for the timer and other materials we bought. If you pay someone to install it, it will take much longer to pay for itself.
So far, it is working properly and so I am satisfied.
