Less than 2 months after installation, this unit will not turn off. It has burst PEX tubing three times due to the overheat condition, and started to smoke and sizzle multiple times.
It will *not* turn off even with both in and out water valves closed, and we have to flip the breakers to render it safe.
That of course means no hot water -- kind of why we bought the unit to start with.
The company is using every excuse in the book to not honor the warranty. They want me to a) hire a technician (at my expense) to troubleshoot the item on site, b) install copper tubing (also at my expense - despite being reminded water hot enough to melt PEX is too hot for skin), c) move the setting to low (meaning lukewarm water), and send them a $100 deposit which upon return of the defective unit, at their discretion, they might refund "if the unit does in fact requires warranty service".
An honorable company would send a new unit and an RMA for the defective one, not seek to place blame (however illogical) on the purchaser. Nor should I be required to do field repairs on the pressure switch (or pay a pro) on a $200 item.
I am being given the run-around, talking to person after person, and the company is using every possible excuse to wiggle out of honoring their warranty.
The unit is unsafe at this point, and represents a fire, flooding, and/or serious scalding risk.
A new unit may or may not have these risks, but I can't be sure BECAUSE THE COMPANY WON'T SEND ME ANOTHER ONE despite the unit being only 2 months old and their "troubleshooting" requires *ME* to spend more on technicians than the original purchase price of the unit.

Rinnai R75LSi Natural Gas Indoor Tankless Water Heater, 7.5 GPM Review

Rinnai R75LSi Natural Gas Indoor Tankless Water Heater, 7.5 GPM

While doing a major remodeling which involved relocating our water heater, we decided to go tankless. Since we were upgrading our shower and installing a garden whirlpool tub, we knew hot water demand would soar. Also, we knew both showers would be running at the same time and the old water heater just would not be able to keep up. Our plumber/HVAC contractor is a specialist in energy efficiency, having previously been an executive with a large national energy efficiency company prior to the bust. His recommendation: the Rinnai NG Tankless Water Heater.
It takes longer to get one installed properly, with the extra venting and the materials required. Don't be part of the learning curve for your installer. Make SURE your installer has experience with tankless installations and ASK FOR REFERENCES. It is a different technology and the installation techniques are different from a traditional water heater.
It is a space saving unit, and extremely quiet. And it can flat crank out the hot water! No lags, no lukewarm spaces, no waiting, just all the hot water you want when you want it! Our gas bill dropped about 15% in a much colder winter - no more water heater constantly running to keep hot water hot, no more shortened showers, and a very happy family.

Eccotemp L5 Portable Tankless Water Heater and Outdoor Shower Review

Eccotemp L5 Portable Tankless Water Heater and Outdoor Shower
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I received my tankless water heater this morning. It was well-packed and the instructions are pretty good. I appreciated the "extras" that are usually "optional at additional cost," like the shower head, mounting hardware, and propane tank hookup.
But (there's always a "but!"), unless you have plumbing fittings handy, plan on a trip to the hardware store. The threads you must connect to are rough and not cut especially well, something that seems common on items from China, so you definitely need to have teflon tape or plumber's putty handy. On my unit, the hose connections to the shower head leak badly at both ends. Not that big a deal since it's intended as a shower, just an annoyance. And, the shower head male threads are a bit short, so one end of the hose would screw on far enough to not leak too badly, but the other end would spray water all over the place until I reversed the hose. Then it just leaked at the water output of the heater. The hose connection (another nice included item) didn't have a rubber gasket.
As far as heating water, it works pretty well. My input water is at about 50 degrees, and with the water flow turned all the way down and the gas flow all the way up, it got hot enough to be uncomfortable.
Until a slight wind blew out the flame. Be sure to plan to use this unit someplace very well protected from the wind. Even a slight breeze, about 10 MPH (guesstimate), will blow out the flame, give you a slug of cold water, and require you to turn the switch off and back on to relight the flame.
I haven't played with it enough to be sure, but my impression is that the unit won't hold a constant temperature of water output. I mention this because it may require you to use the unit in a place where you can actually reach the controls during use to adjust the temperature of your shower.
Even with the shortcomings, I recommend the unit as a camping or backup water heater. For the price, you can't go too far wrong. Just keep it within reach and out of the wind.

This item broke after three weeks of use; I had been using it properly, and it simply cut off in the midst of heating a cup of water and never worked again. Previously I've used a NORPRO version of this device, which lasted much longer (I broke it through improper use -- letting it boil dry). I'm going back to Norpro.

Rinnai R94LSi Natural Gas Indoor Tankless Water Heater, 9.4 GPM Review

Rinnai R94LSi Natural Gas Indoor Tankless Water Heater, 9.4 GPM
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We've had the Rinnai R94LSi for about 1.5 years at this point and have been extremely happy with it. Now that we have had it for a while, I figured I should sit down and write a quick review about it.
Before getting this tankless water heater, we actually had 2 40-gallon hot water heaters in our house. Unfortunately, because of the way the plumbing was run, we had a major issue with running out of hot water if the kids took a shower or bath while we were cleaning up the kitchen at night. When we had the money to do this project, we actually did it to fix the issue with running out of hot water and figured that any energy savings would be a bonus.
Here are some of the main things we've really enjoyed about this unit:
1) Since I replaced 2 water heaters with one tankless heater, I was able to get some extra storage space in the garage and then built a workbench where the storage had previously been. Taken alone, the space savings almost made this tankless worth it for me!
2) We never run out of hot water anymore. Our house has 3.5 bathrooms, kitchen, and laundry - and I can run all the faucets on full blast at any time of year without overloading this unit. (As a side note, we do live in Austin, TX so I suspect that areas with a colder water supply may need a larger unit for the same sized house.)
3) The energy savings have been noticeable. This is one area I wasn't completely convinced of when I bought the tankless unit - but the savings on our monthly bill have been noticeable. What I've done is to compare my gas and water usage with the same month from the previous year and have found that the gas usage has been cut basically in half. The water usage has not changed. It will still take a while before this pays for itself, but I wasn't really expecting that it ever would.
4) We no longer have a water tank in the attic. One of our previous water heaters was sitting in the 2nd story attic and I've known several people who have had their tanks rupture and cause thousands of dollars of damage. With the tankless unit, I no longer have to worry about that issue. Not that other things can't leak, but they don't have 40 gallon tanks! ;).
5) Compared to other brands of tankless heaters, the minimum flow rate is much better - I talk about this in more depth in the next section.
The technology with tankless heaters is quite a bit different from traditional hot water heaters, so here are some other things to consider:
1) I didn't fully understand this before buying the Rinnai, but the minimum flow rate is critically important with tankless water heaters. This number represents the minimum amount of hot water that needs to be flowing before the heater will kick on. Basically, this is just something to keep in mind and it's one of those things that is just different compared to a traditional water heater. I thank my lucky stars that I went with the Rinnai instead of the cheaper models that I also looked at because it turns out that the minimum flow rate isn't as low on those units since most people are just comparing the maximum flow rate numbers! This has impacted me twice when I was taking a cold shower immediately after working out - on those occasions the hot water line was completely drained before I was done showering and I ended up with a REALLY COLD shower until I could get the hot water line filled again.
2) When deciding which tankless unit to buy, be sure to take your local cold water temperature into account. These units will be able to raise the temperature of a certain amount of water by a specific amount - so if your cold water is too cold for the unit you buy, I suspect you will be disapointed. I probably wouldn't even mention this, except that I've read a lot of bad reviews where this seemed to be at the root of the problem. Also, I talked to 3 different plumbers before buying this R94LSi and one of them recommended the R75LSi instead - I'm glad I went with the larger unit since it really wasn't much more money anyway.
As a final note: when we did start looking seriously into this purchase, I had several plumbers come by to bid the job for me; but it quickly became obvious that I could do it for a lot less money. [...]
If you do decide to go the do-it-yourself route, remember that the tankless unit needs a 3/4" gas feed instead of the 1/2" that your current water heater uses. You can't just use an adapter for this - you need to be able to get back to a larger gas section and resize the feed from there (google is a great tool for understanding what you need to do here). As far as the plumbing connections go, the SharkBite connectors were a real life-saver and I'm much more confident in the durability of the connections.
Anyway, I know this review has run kind of long, but I want to repeat that I highly recommend these tankless heaters. We love ours and I would never want to trade back now that I know what I was missing:).

Bosch GL6 Ariston 6-Gallon Point-of-Use Indoor Electric Mini-Tank Water Heater Review

Bosch GL6 Ariston 6-Gallon Point-of-Use Indoor Electric Mini-Tank Water Heater
Average Reviews:

This is our 2nd Ariston heater - the first is a 4 gallon under the kitchen sink. We got this one to sit in our basement bathroom and feed it, the main floor bathroom sink and a future 1/2 bath on the 2nd floor. It just makes so much sense to keep a small amount of hot water ready to use right near the fixture. That way you don't have to waste a bunch of water if you need hot water. These seem very well insulated, so I think that the standby losses are negligible. Our main heater is a gas tankless, and these really help improve the performance for intermittent uses such as washing hands or dishes. I just put this inline with the tankless, so that it can "smooth" out our hot water. The tankless works best for steady uses, such as showers and filling a dishwasher. Adding one of these Aristons gives you the best of all worlds.

The Ariston 6-gallon point-of-use electric mini-tank water heater eliminates the wait time for hot water to come from one or two sink faucets. You can install the heater independently or in-line with a larger water-heating source. You need no hard wiring to power your unit; simply plug it into any standard outlet and this heater's ready to go. The glass-lined tank ensures long life, and the superior insulation provides quick recovery and greater energy efficiency. This 120-volt, 1500-watt water heater weighs 30 pounds and measures 14 1/2x 14 1/2x 12 1/4 inches. Ariston backs its heater with a manufacturer's 6-year limited warranty for the heat exchanger and a 1-year limited warranty for parts.

I expected a unit of this size to put out hotter water when flowing to a single sink. It's useable but not as good as others I've used. I'd hate to think of what the lower wattage models would do.
It also has the annoying habit of occasionally switching on for a few seconds even when not in use, there's no reason for this to keep the few ounces of water it keeps inside already warmed up.

I use this for all grain beer making when the weather is too cold to use propane outside . Normally it would take around 2 hours for my wimpy stovetop to bring 7 gallons of wort to a boil , but with the aid of this baby I can do it in 45 minutes , which is a huge improvement . Haven't had any problems with scorching . The way it is designed it circulates liquid while it heats it . For the price it can't be beat !

I bought this water heater for the price and because I know Rheem is a good brand. Installation was easy and took less than a few hours. The water is very hot on the lowest setting and much hotter than my old one. So far seems to be a very good product and probably will last almost as long as my old 18 year one. I like the fact that you do not need a match to light it just hold the ignitor and it lit the pilot right away. I also found it is much quieter than my old one, but that is probably because their is no sediment built up in this one and hopefully with the magnesium anode rod their will be less sediment and no rust, as that was why I had to replace it, my old one had rusted through the bottom.

Average Reviews:

I bought two GL2.5 water heaters in 3/2006 & installed one for a master bedroom and the other for the kitchen sink w/a T to dishwasher. Very nice to have hot water fast. Otherwise have to wait for it to come from attic quite some distance. BUT the directions suggest CLEANING it out every year. This pretty much means uninstall it if in a tight location! Turn upside down to drain, descale element and REPLACE ANODE! Every YEAR! Have you ever done that with a water heater... and they last 10 yrs. no problem! Well here, I did not do that & the first started to fail in late 2007. The thermostat breaker would kick off & I would reset it. Then that stopped working and I ordered a replacement thermostat in 4/2008 from Grainger. That worked & then we had our main circuit breaker kicking off easy. I think it was shorting through the mineral deposits! Unknown to me at the time... Then the tank fails mid-2009. Soon in Fall 2009 the 2nd unit had a tank failure (fyi, it never had the breaker or thermostat trip first). Both units were a mess to clean up. Lucky we were home. These are not safe w/o access and the recommended pan. The pan should be deep and have a drain & water alarm. The yearly service MUST be done. Just not worth it so I put everything back the way it was originally. Why not use a better tank and design? How they are now is asking for trouble unless you are very good w/scheduled preventive maintenance.
