Honeywell RTH7600D Touchscreen 7-Day Programmable Thermostat Review

(More customer reviews)Honeywell makes a very large line of programmable electronic thermostats. At first glance, this particular thermostat has nothing to distinguish it from any other programmable tstat from your local hardware store. (7-day programming, +/- 1 degree accuracy, etc.) However, this thermostat has some functions that make it quite a bit better. I've had RiteTemp's and Lux tstats, and this one is much better.
Most electronic thermostats kick on the system when you are one degree under, and then run it until you are one degree over. This (and all Honeywell electronic tstats) instead target a certain number of cycles per hour (based on system type), and try and hold the temperature as constant as possible. Since I installed this a few days ago, it has not budged off of the setpoint.
Another cool feature is the recovery feature. Basically, it measures how quickly your house is losing heat (or warming up, in the summer), and kicks on the system at the correct time so it is at your setpoint right at the time you program. This eliminates guessing how long it will take your house to heat so it will be toasty when you get home at 6PM. Instead, you just set the tstat for 6PM and let it figure out the rest.
The install guide is clear and presented me with no problems. Admittedly, I don't have a complicated system (1-stage heat/cool.) It tells you how to properly wire it, and is fairly straightforward on when you need to call for help. Most folks shouldn't have any problems.
IMPORTANT: Use the included wire stickers! Some installers do not attach, say, the white wire to the "W" terminal. Depending on whim, they can completely attach the wires at random. Bad things happen if you plug the wrong wire onto the wrong terminal. If a wire was on the "W" terminal before, it needs to go on the new W terminal, even if it is bright yellow.
I didn't have any trouble at all programming this one... in a few easy steps:
1) Hit the "Schedule" button.
2) Use the arrow keys and the "select" button to select which day(s) you want to program. Hit "Next Step".
3) Use the arrow keys and "Next Step" to go through the setpoints and times.
4) Hit "Done" when finished.
If you need to set any advanced options (like changing to a two-stage furnace or A/C, setting heat pump options, etc.): Hit "System", then hold down "Fan" for five seconds. Use the table in the manual and "Next Step" to pull up the option you need to change and use the arrow keys to change it. I set up the Filter Change Reminder that way. The fact you have to refer to the manual isn't that bad since they are options you won't have to change more than once.

(More customer reviews)We bought one of these hot water dispensers in Novemeber '09 after having owned Insinkerator brands in the last 2 homes in which we have lived. We selected this product based on the style and selection of stainless steel finish.
Recently, our Quick and Hot has begun emitting only a tiny trickle of water which takes forever to fill a cup. Not only that, but the water is dispensed in such a way that it comes out of the tap in a very erratic fashion, sometimes out of the center, but just as often, out of either side of the tap, so that it sputters and splashes the hot water onto your hand as you hold the cup. We looked in the instruction manual provided by the company and they suggest removing the filter to soak it in vinegar, then use a brush to remove any debris. This accomplished nothing. As the product has a one year replacement warranty, we thought we could contact the company for a possible replacement. Read the warranty carefully. It does not cover the following problems, which are taken from the instruction manual:
1. Water is not hot (really? isn't this a HOT water dispenser?)
2. Hot water drips of sputters from faucet (be sure to wear protective gear while using the dispenser)
3. Water does not flow right away or at all (really? are you just supposed to imagine how nice it would be to have the water come out into your cup?)
I would never buy another product made by this company.

(More customer reviews)There's good news and bad news. I bought this unit as a training unit to check out the technology and have a good extra hob on hand for times when we strain our kitchen resources. The intent is to eventually equip our kitchen with an induction cooktop for energy efficiency.
The good news is that the technology works as advertised. It's remarkably quick and has plenty of power despite running off a normal power outlet. The bad news is that on this unit the heating element (if that is the correct terminology) is only about 7 to 8 inches across. It worked fine when we made soups, though we did notice that only the middle boiled or simmered. However, when frying, the limitation of the element size became a problem. We used a lodge 12" cast iron skillet to fry fish. The center of the pan put a beautiful tan on the panko, but the outside of the pan was relatively cool, requiring that each piece of fish be flipped to four positions before it was properly cooked.
We tested the unit by wetting the bottom of a cold pan and watching how it dried. The center bubbled and dried, but the outer bottom was only warm to the touch. I thought perhaps it was defective, but other reviewers have commented on the problem.
I notice that most of the units on the market do not specify the size of the heating element. Whether this exposes a problem with the technology or is just marketing avoiding a problem with inexpensive units I can't tell.
I am hopeful of the technology, but returned this unit because of it's limitations. If you only use smaller pans, or rarely, if ever, fry, I recommend it.
As has been mentioned before the first unit arrived broken.

The unit works well. Was easily installed. Water heat is fine for our small-demand house (2bed/2bath/1500SF). The only thing that takes some getting used to is the minimum flow requirement. There's no way to get any hot water without turning a given fauct on at over 50% capacity. And single-knob showers can get a little tricky to balance.
NOTEZ BIEN:
Before installing, verify that your grid tie-in is sufficient. My panel is 200A, but the utility company tied in with a wire only capable of carrying 100A. This was fine for my house until this unit was installed. It requires 3@40A breakers, which was no problem...plenty of room on the board. But now, whenever the hot water flows, the lights throughout the house start a pulsing. I've called my retail provider, my utilities service provider, and the service director several times over the last 2 weeks, and can't get anyone to get out here and run thicker copper. It's not too annoying, but I'm concerned that the wire's going to fry if they don't get their act together and figure out whose job it is to fix this.
****Update****
Even with the electrical issues taken care of, the unit I bought, which worked well for several months, started acting up on me. Intermittent hot/lukewarm was a major issue. No flow problems: was running a shower alone. After some time, I opened the box and noticed that the unit had a leak in one of the 3 "coils" (tubes, really). I called the manufacturer, they verified the warranty info, and sent me a new unit. The new unit worked for about 6 months before it also stopped providing hot water. Not sure how I ended up with 2 dogs, but that was enough. No leaking the second time around, but I gave up and went with a regular tank, as the house was by then a rental.
I'd drop it to one star if it wasn't for the great customer service I received.

The unit, (once properly vented) works really well for cooling my bed room but it shuts off when the water needs drained. Durning these hot temperatures this is after only 2-2.5 hrs. Draining the water is not an easy task because the drain is only 1 inch from the floor so you can only use a really really shallow dish. It does come with a hose to connect to a drain for continous drainage but the drain must be below or at the same level as the AC unit.
This drainage problem makes the unit NOT useful for long term cooling (you can't run it all night or use it to cool while at work)
As a long term solution I am working on buidling a stand to set the unit on for continous drainage into a bucket but it is heavey and vibration makes noise a problem. Other portable AC unit have a collecting bottle which is easy to revome for drainage.

Hunter 42999 Just Right Digital Thermostat Review

(More customer reviews)Winter weather has finally hit mid-state Illinois! I have been prepared and had the furnace all ready to go. My family returned home on Thanksgiving to a cold house. My old mechanical round style thermostat had finally failed (it had been acting up in the recent days).
I was a little nervous having to select a new thermostat and even more nervous about installing it. I'm not a real hands-on person with regard to home repair. But we were in a real need for something.
I picked this unit up very late on Thanksgiving night and proceeded to take it home (don't forget the 2 AA batteries). This unit was replacing an old round mechanical style thermostat in my home. The box says it would be a workable replacement solution and it was.
Installation was very simple (thank goodness I only have a 2-wire heating only system). I removed the old thermostat from the wall and removed the two wires (after powering off my system) from the old thermostat base. I followed the instructions that came with the Hunter unit (there are several easy to read wiring diagrams for the different heating/cooling systems) and attached the wires to the new base of the Hunter unit (after attaching it to the wall). The terminals are easy to read and hooking up the new one was snap. I attached the main unit to the wall base and installed the batteries. I followed the instructions to set the desired temperature and haven't had a need to touch it since. I had this unit fully installed in about 15 minutes (remember I'm slow since I'm new to this). Even for me this was easy to install properly. This unit will replace many thermostat styles and will control most heating/cooling systems (a full list is available on the package). Even better the factory default settings were the right ones to control my 2-wire gas hot water baseboard furnace.
The Hunter functions very well. Last night the outside temperatures dipped into the mid twenties while my family and I remained comfortable and warm inside. I have other thermometers (digital) in the house and the Hunter keeps the room temperature within 1 degree Fahrenheit from the set level regardless of how cold or windy it is outside. Something my old mechanical thermostat could never do.
The features of this unit are nice. The LCD screen is easy to read. The buttons are large and easy to use. The unit has a slim profile and looks nice on the wall (shouldn't be too noticeable in any room). The mode selection buttons and other controls are neatly hidden behind an easy to open swing out door on one side of the LCD display while the batteries are behind a similar door on the other side (no need to remove thermostat to replace batteries)! Operating instructions are neatly printed on the inside of the door housing the controls for easy access eliminating the need to search for the instruction manual later. I also appreciate the fact that the thermostat is electronically controlled and the unit doesn't have to be perfectly level to function correctly. This unit has functioned without problems and has been worry free for me and has kept my family warm and comfortable.
*** UPDATE 11-11-08 ***
We've recently moved to a new house and the Hunter served us well all year at the old place. It functions well and keeps the house comfortable. The batteries last a long, long time (a year plus).
I've just installed the identical thermostat in our new home to replace another round mechanical thermostat. This new home has a heat/cool forced air system where the old house was baseboard water heat. Again the thermostat installed very easily with the added wire diagrams. Installation is quite simple and the thermostat is easy to set up (just a matter of flipping a switch and adjusting the set point (one button).
I highly recommend this thermostat for an economical efficient means to ensure comfort for your home and family. The Hunter provided a noticeable energy savings on my old home, and I'm sure it will on this one too. Again, highly recommended!

I am a little disappointed that there are not fan-speed settings, because this little unit is loud, and although the item-description does not claim anything different, it just seems like the engineering of the fan speed could have been adjusted lower. Especially since the heat-delivered out of the grill is not exactly hot. Hot enough to classify the unit as a heater, but not hot enough to deserve the continual jet-blast of "warm" air. One point of interest in favor of this 240volt, 20AMP Marley heater, is that when the fan bearings finally give-up their constant screaming, the solid metal construction will benefit as an attractive and convenient step-stool.

The TX9000TS is the 3rd electronic thermostat I've owned and is probably the most intuitive of them all. Lux has provided a generous sized display and a very responsive touch-screen. The back light is a pleasing blue. The unit is 3 parts - the main unit, a back plate where you connect the wires and an optional accent plate that provides a .75 inch border to provide a finished look.
I had read the earlier reviews on Amazon and had decided that I will not read the instructions prior to the install to determine how intuitive this system really was? The only exception I would allow myself was if the wiring was significantly different from my old unit - which it was not!
The setup was relatively simple. Removed the old unit and replaced it with the new back plate and accent bezel. No new holes to drill. The accent bezel is the closest piece to the wall and is held up by the back plate. I straightened the old wires, inserted into the corresponding clamp and tightened the screws - Total time of 15 minutes.
I inserted 2 new alkaline batteries (And NO, I did not use the recommended Duracell or Energizer!) and the unit came to life. I clicked on the time and it started beeping. I could see arrows on the right and intuitively touched them to set the time. Did the same to set the day. Touching the 'Menu' got me into the programming mode for the unit. I touched "SCROLL" to skip to the next feature, and "NEXT" for the next step in the feature programming. I do admit I took a few iterations to get used to the programming logic. Also 'YES' to accept settings is a little different from the colloquial "ENTER" we are used to in a computer literate world!
This unit is programmable for every day of the week. I, at most, need one setting for all week-days and one each for Sat and Sun. While programming the days, I noticed that they had a "COPY" function. I was sure that this was to copy my settings - every time I touched it, it went over to the next day. I thought that the data was being copied over and I did verify it after I completed my first iteration of programming. By the way, once you are in the programming mode, setting the start time for any period and/or setting the temperature is as simple as touching the time or temperature and using the up/down arrows. Could not be simpler!
I was fortunate that I had the program settings available from my old unit - once I went through a few iterations of errors (not using "YES" to accept settings!) the unit was programmed - Total time of 15 minutes
I spent another 10 minutes setting the 'Filter Usage' and 'Swing settings' and reviewing the 'Temperature Calibration' and 'Energy Usage' monitor. The Swing settings only went upto 2.5 degrees in 0.5 degree increments (One of the other reviewer found that it went upto 3.0 degrees???)
I did not see the 'Smart Recovery' option and thought that it might be a switch on the circuit board like my last unit. It was 1.30 in the morning and I did not feel like reading the instructions. I attached the TX9000TS and it kicked off instantly.
The instructions did have the following options that can be changed with the small slide switches towards the back of the main unit -- 12/24 hours time format, Smart Recovery, Degrees in C or F, and 2 or 5 minute interval between restarts.OTHER REVIEWER'S CONCERNS
Some of the other reviewers have concerns that the unit does not automatically switch between heating and cooling to keep the temperature constant. This is done intentionally!
In the summer, our ideal temperature is 74 degrees. When we leave for work, our "DAY" period is set to 82 degrees so that the AC does not cool the home while we're out. In an auto switch between heating and cooling, the heat would take over and get the temperature to 82 degrees and maintain it - which is NOT the intent!! We do not want the AC to cool any below 82. I can, of course, see the gentleman's point if one spends 90% of their time at home and is OK with the associated heating/cooling cost.PROS:

* Very easy to program
* Love the LARGE display and the accuracy of the touch zones.
* Very nice Backlight and fantastic positioning of the backlight switch.

* Power Usage also seems like a valuable feature...will find out in the near future! I did manage to find it by pressing menu and scrollingCONS:
* Lux could have done a better job with the programming terminology and could have improved the user experience with regards to the programming. For e.g., if you had to program day and time, it continues to loop when you click "NEXT"...to exit the programming you need to use "MENU".
* Another feature I miss from my old Honeywell is the "RUN PROGRAM" button which when pressed would clear the "OVERRIDE" functions and run as per the program. The TX9000TS unit achieves this either by touching the temperature and using the arrow keys to bring the temperature to the programmed value, OR, by touching "HOLD" twice. Minor inconvenience.
* The tabs, on the top of the base plate, that hold this unit are very small and I am in constant fear of breaking them off. My old Honeywell had a very robust design.CONCLUSION:
I do agree that the TX9000TS is not completely intuitive, but it is nowhere as unintuitive as others claim. I do like to play around with stuff that I get...if it were all super-intuitive and easy then it'd be no fun! ;o)

(More customer reviews)I have the electric tape on a copper plumbing fixture. It is installed in a way that is even more thorough than the instructions suggest. It still did not keep a valve from splitting, and the temperatures were not below 20 for more than a few hours. I may try to use the tape again when I rebuild the copper fixture, but I will be using much more of it, and reinforcing the electric tape with foam insulation.

But unlike their tiny portable units there is NO WAY to turn down the heat. 125000 BTUs is a LOT of heat, enough for nearly 3000 square feet. But it consumes nearly 5.5 gallons of propane per hour to do so. That would be OK for really cold conditions. But it is all or nothing. There is no thermostat or , as previously stated, way to turn down to a lower heat setting. I found a similar unit at Grainger that has three heat settings, (50/95/125,000 BtuH Output) and is priced the same, so I am sending this one back.

Five Tips for Buying a HeaterChoosing a space heater is a matter of sifting through a bewildering array of types, power ratings, and fuel sources. Let's break it down a little to make the process easier.

What are the different types of space heaters?
Radiant heaters emit infrared radiation that directly warms the objects in front of the heaters (rather than the surrounding air). If you only need heat by a desk or in a small section of a room, a radiant heater is quiet and will use very little power.
Forced-air heaters use a fan to blow air that has been warmed by metal or ceramic heating elements. A forced-air heater is appropriate for quickly heating up a small- to medium-sized room, but can be noisy.
Convection heaters draw cold air from the floor; the air is warmed by heating coils and emitted from the top of the heater. A convection heater is appropriate for quickly heating up a small- to medium-sized room, but also can be noisy.
Radiators work by heating oil enclosed in a reservoir, gradually heating the surrounding air. If heating speed isn't an issue, you might want to opt for a radiator. These are extremely quiet and effective--perfect for bedrooms.


Should I buy an electric or a combustion model?If you want a heater that will be available in emergencies, or that can heat areas larger than a single room, choose a "combustion" model--one that is powered by a gas or fuel like propane, kerosene, natural gas, or diesel. Which fuel type you choose depends largely on convenience and local availability. For example, diesel would be appropriate for a heater you take with you on long car trips.

How powerful a heater do I need?Heaters are rated by BTU, which stands for British Thermal Unit (the amount of heat needed to heat one pound of water by 1 degree F). To find out how many BTU you need:
Calculate the volume of the space to be heated by multiplying square footage by height.
Multiply that number by 4 if your insulation is poor, 3 if it's average, or 2 if it's good.
The resulting number is a ballpark figure for how many BTU you'll need.
Do space heaters cost a lot to operate? As a general rule, electric space heaters are more expensive to use than combustion models. I am the only user and am very careful with it. Having replaced it myself the first time, I contaced Kohler and they sent a replacement for free having stated that this certainly should not have happened.This quick and generous customer response made me feel very positive toward the company.
Well it broke again yesterday. I am very disappointed and am currently looking foe a more dependable model. I cannot but believe that they are aware of the issue and have chosen to continue to sell it anyway.

(More customer reviews)This heater is the most efficient rated gas heater and is a very nice size and appears to be indestructible. The first one I received via UPS showed up in ridiculous condition in an open box covered with dust and surrounded with shredded packing tape. It was quickly replaced with next day delivery via Fed Ex instead of UPS and was still only shipped in a single box but at least not crushed. It was installed in less than 2 hours by my pool guy and works well. Seems to heat 1 degree per hour, but with the cold weather now, I will close the pool and have to wait until next season for a long term test. The materials are a plastic fiberglass type of construction and this seems to be very high quality. More to come.
Amazon had the best price and despite the first shipping disaster they came through with customer service,even though the Phillipino service center is annoying with their "I am certain I can help" statement every other sentence! They really should consider packing this item in an outer carton. I posted some pics of the carton in the packaging feedback, not sure where to view it but if you find it , it they are hilarious.
My pool guy recommends putting a "fireman's switch" on this. It allows the pump to continue to run for 15 minutes after it shuts off the heater to allow residual heat ( 400,000 Btus worth)to be dissipated from the heater and protect the element and piping. I'll have it placed this winter.

They keep on giving me a hard time and asked me to do different tasks like cleaning, testing, ... The "regular" maintenance is impossible to be done by a regular household without specific knowledge of water heater. It is a pain to due with those customer services. They're really well trained to giving customers a hard time to claim anything under warranty. I surrender! I'll not consider this brand again in my life.

It's not very sophisticated and seems simple to assemble, but a crucial piece (side connector - connects heater to tube that leads to filter) does not fit into the main piece. It is supposed to easily slide in, turn 1/4, and lock into place. I'll have to modify it slightly to make it work. Disappointing.
