Produces a very low flow of nice hot water. Definitely worth the money. Warranty is worthless though, it basically has no warranty as a portable unit it's sold as. Hopefully it lasts. One good long power outage and it pays for itself though.

Bradford White MI5036FBN-337 50 Gallon Natural Gas Water Heater Review

I purchased this unit for my 5 unit apartment bldg. I had 2 40 gal units plumbed in series/parallel. I replaced a "State" Brand that died after 18 years...yea 18 years, the other unit is at 15 years.
This BW 50 gal is doing the trick and is providing hot water for eight persons in five apartments; so far no one has said they have run out of hot water. Seven take showers (not at the same time thank goodness) and one takes a bath. It is performing so well that I took the second State 40 gal offline, and keep it as an emergency back up.
The question is...will this unit last 10+ years? Well see.

The company shipped the heater quickly, well packaged via UPS. Easy to intall, my wife did it!. We had another one from a different maker that developed a leak after about three years. We have very acid water and I am hopeing the bronze tank in the in-sink-erator heater will last longer. Won't know for at least three years. Unit does the job, lots of hot water at our kitchen sink and dishwasher.

Factory-Reconditioned AquaStar 1600H-NG-RE (Hydro) Natural Gas Tankless Water Heater Review

Factory-Reconditioned AquaStar 1600H-NG-RE (Hydro) Natural Gas Tankless Water Heater
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I selected the Bosch Aquastar 1600H for several reasons. It was the correct size for my 3 bed 1 bath ranch home where all of the plumbing is centrally located. I liked the fact that there was no standing pilot light OR plug for an igniter on the system. But the biggest selling point was that it used standard 4" Class B vent pipe for the flue. Most of the tankless water heaters that cost $900 to $2000 stab you in the pocket book again by using 3" stainless steel flue pipe that costs a fortune. In fact, a lot of them have optional kits that start around $300 for the basic pieces with you needing to buy additional pieces just to install you heater.
Now, the negative. First off, understand that I am a contractor by profession and that while installing this water heater was pretty straight forward; diagnosing issues with it is a whole different ball of wax. This was the first time that I had ever installed a tankless water heater and I was putting it in my own home. After changing my plumbing lines around, switching out the black pipe to ¾" for the gas line, running a new flue and hooking everything up, I was having problems getting it to function correctly. More specifically, the heater would not heat the water to a desired temperature and if the furnace or the stove/oven was running, the temperature would drop even more. After checking the manual and getting online to find out how to make a manometer ([...]), I found that the natural gas pressure was set incorrectly for my house. It was measuring around 5 WC (inches water column) and while it didn't really come out and say it, I found that this heater works best on at least 6 ½ WC. While the pressure was fine for my stove, the furnace and my old water heater, it just wasn't enough for this new water heater. The manual says to have the gas company come out to test and adjust the pressure, however, I just did it myself and set it to 7 ¼ WC. I will say that while this heater saves natural gas by not constantly heating the water in a tank, it does use A LOT more to heat your water when it is in demand. Another thing I found out, if installing this water heater in a climate where the temperature can drop below freezing, MAKE SURE that you install it in an area where there is good air flow with a decent ambient temperature. The reason being is that tankless water heaters like this Bosch Aquastar work on a capillary system to heat the water. If cold air comes down the flue, it can freeze the water in the heat exchanger and bust the pipes within it or just not function as your water line for your hot water will not flow.
However, after that, I will say that I have continuously enjoyed an endless supply of hot water. With two teenagers in the house, I can tell you that it used to be frustrating to have to wait an hour to take a shower if they had used the shower beforehand. This is the reason that I went with a tankless water heater to begin with. I also am happy to report that my gas bill was and has continued to be cut in HALF. I have been using this system for 7 months now and I can't wait to see my bills for the winter.

Rheem RTG-66DVN Direct Vent Natural Gas Tankless Water Heater for 2-3 Bathroom Homes Review

Rheem RTG-66DVN Direct Vent Natural Gas Tankless Water Heater for 2-3 Bathroom Homes
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is the second Rheem tankless water heater I've installed during my ongoing-home-renovation project (I now have one on each end of the house).
Some things to be aware of:
1) There is a lag for the tankless water heater to kick in and start hot water through the pipes (three seconds?). My kitchen sink is on the floor directly above the tankless water heater and I have to run over a gallon of water out before I get hot water. For that reason I am going to install under-the-sink, pass-through mini-tank (2.5 gallon) electric water heaters in the kitchen and bathrooms for instant hot water.
2) In both cases I've direct-vented horizontally, through a stud wall that is in front of a 12" concrete block wall. The main horizontal 3"/5" pipe that comes in the direct-vent kit is too short to go through about 17" of wall, so I had to buy a longer 3"/5" pipe (for an extra $100) from Rheem to get through the walls. You still need to buy the kit, though, for the elbow and outside termination pieces.
3) This is subjective, but it seems the water in the hot water pipe gets cold faster than it did with the tank water heater. With a tank water heater you could get hot water, then come back 20 minutes later and the water was still fairly warm right away. With the tankless water heater it seems the water gets colder faster, so you have to run that gallon of water through the pipes to get to the hot water again. In both cases the hot water pipes were insulated.
4) About once every two-three months the wired-in remote control displays an error number...it has been different every time. The first two times the error number wasn't listed in the documentation, so I called for telephone support. Now I just unplug the unit, wait 5-10 seconds, and plug it in again. It starts right up.
5) I can't be sure it was only the swapping out of the water heater, but my gas/electric bill has been, on average, a bit lower since replacing my old 40 gallon gas water heater.

Electric Shower Head Tankless Hot Water Heater 110 V Review

Electric Shower Head Tankless Hot Water Heater 110 V
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This unit HAS to have a low flow in order for the heating capacity not to be exceeded by the requirements of the water flow. Water requires alot of energy input to change it's temp, and the colder it comes out of the ground, the lower the maximum output temp will be at a given flow rate... thus they limit the maximum flow rate so that it will work in places where the water does not come out of the ground at 60+ degrees as it likely does in most of Brazil.
Brazilians may be used to 0.88 gallon per minute showers, but people in the US may be dissappointed, based on what they're used to.
They should mention this more prominently in the Product Description, which, overall is hard to decipher due to all caps in sections, and a total lack of paragraph separation...
The other thing that should be prominently and correctly identified is that this device, though it is 110 volts, would not be safe to plug into a common 110/120 volt household or commercial grade receptacle. For a safe installation, it requires minimum 10 gauge wiring, and a 30 amp breaker, as 25 amps is not a common breaker size here.
Additionally, wire is not commonly sold with an amperage rating... Wire size is dictated by code according to the breaker amperage, which must match or exceed the amperage requirement of the device... which in this case is 25 amps, so 30 is the next step up in common breaker sizes.

Chronomite SR-40 240v Instant-Flow SR Tankless Water Heater Review

Chronomite SR-40 240v Instant-Flow SR Tankless Water Heater
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was somewhat skeptical about tank-less electric but I knew very well tank-less gas heaters from Europe where tank-less technology is used for over 50 years by now. Also, some companies put specs according to their agenda but then in practical use those do not perform. To my surprise I am very pleased with this Chronomite product - all is right on the button and no misleading. Unit is simple, small, very HD and absolutely marvelous. I replaced huge tank heater, run water from the tank to this unit, total cost of adapters was about 30 bucks, all available from local hardware store. I live in Central Florida, but it is winter now, so I get cold water at about 55 to 65 degrees. Unit is heating it very well, on kitchen faucet I get 125 which is 15 degrees more then before, and shower is only slightly less then what it was but only in flow, approximately 95% of flow from standard tank heater yet with water remaining at original 110 max. Consider that in Florida water pipes are embedded in concrete floor (yes, the plumbers job security it is, no kidding), and there is very little if any wrap on pipes to prevent heat loss. I the nut shell: I am very happy with this unit, even if it takes 40A from "former" tank fuse. It appears also that Chronomite heaters have very good soft start contact solenoids and there is no power blinking or EMF distortions present when unit goes on. Now, if you want to be real efficient, you may consider 120V 20A unit under the sink in the kitchen to give you hot water in about 5 seconds, then 240V 20A unit next to washing machine and 40A 240V unit for shower use. Consider those heaters have water flow restriction but if you place them accordingly you will never know those are there. The match is not that complicated and all it takes is common sense and either you can install it or get plumber to do it because no house is the same like another. Please remember also and I can not stress this enough: I do have degree in electronic engineering so I know this stuff but regardless of what can or cannot be done I have to comply with safety requirement regulations and National Electrical Code standards. Please do not improvise, because it is not safe to jazz specs and hope for the best. Now on the shiny side - if you have electric tank-less heaters set right in your house, watch your electric bill drop by 50% more or less. Not to mention that besides saving your money you also save our great nations resources and now you can get that 52 inch LCD LED TV you wanted all with clear conscience and no regrets. There is also funny side to this - electric tank-less are endless, which means you can have hot water in the shower even if someone took 3 hour shower, so if you have teenage daughters, they will be most grateful and no more fights about who run the hot water tank down.

(EDIT 01/27/2011) My initial review below was written based on an old design that had some quality issues. From my communication with Amazon shoppers like you, and the Consumer Relations folks at Insinkerator, it appears that current models have been redesigned to hopefully eliminate the problems I had. It also appears from those same communications that Insinkerator is going beyond the warranty period to replace some consumers' units when they discover this problem. Because of that I have upgraded my rating to a neutral 3-stars and modified my review somewhat. (In all fairness maybe I should retract it because of the design update. Have to give that some thought.) If you have problems with an existing unit, I also would encourage you to contact Insinkerator support to see what they can do for you. They're very good in my experience when your product is in warranty. I've heard from several folks that Insinkerator has replaced their unit outside of warranty too when they had this problem. Obviously there is some limit to what they will be willing to do, but the call is free. So if you've found this review because of a problem with your existing unit, your first step should be to call Insinkerator at 800-558-5712 and give them a chance to make it right. Post here with your experiences.(Original Review) This Insinkerator product suffers from a couple of design flaws. Like many here I found a puddle of water under my unit about two years after installing it. Checked into buying a new unit, but at $200 I wasn't going to give in easily. After reading other folks' experience with the unit I opened mine up and found the obvious source of the leak. There is a 1/4" plastic vent hose than helps handle the return hot water after you release the faucet handle. Since it's a non-pressurized unit, all water in the line up to faucet gets returned to the tank after you release the faucet handle. This hose, combined with a plastic overflow tank handles the water return. The root cause of the leaking problem is the type of tubing that was used for this one part. In the hot water heater it sits at near 200F, 24/7/365, and it can't handle the heat. Mine had turned a dark brown to nearly black color and had completely failed where the hose was routed right along the stainless steel tank. Every time we used the heater the return water ended up in our cabinet. Because of this one piece, customers everywhere are replacing their tanks prematurely. It can be fixed if you are handy. Please note that any modification of your unit will void the warranty, and rightfully so. If your unit is under warranty you should call Insinkerator at 800-558-5712 and have them replace it. If you buy a new unit, don't mess with it -- it's under warranty. Even if it's out of warranty, give them a call -- there's a good chance they'll do right by you. If you do try and repair it, know that you are on your own. Insinkerator strongly advises against any owner-initiated component repair. What I have done has been untested by Insinkerator and they have implemented their own fix in the current product design. Anything that happens during or after any repair you make will be your responsibility. And remember, nothing lasts forever.
HOW TO REPAIR: Basically you have to replace the hose with the right kind, and fortunately it's pretty easy. I recommend silicone tubing (rated to 500F), and you'll need some with 1/8" or 3/16" inside diameter. I bought some from an Amazon seller, 1/8" ID and 3/8" OD with thick 1/8" walls. (Edit: The original tubing is 3/16" ID but I went with 1/8 for a good snug fit. 3/16" ID tubing will also work quite well, and is what I would recommend at this point if you can find it.) Search on Amazon and you'll find what I'm talking about. Unfortunately it's only sold in 10' or longer lengths, and you need less than a foot. If you can find it locally, all the better. For good measure get a couple of small plastic zip ties (cable ties) or the proper sized spring clamp to secure the new tubing.
1) Unplug, drain, and remove the tank. After unplugging the power cord, run water thru the unit till cold water flows out the faucet. Then place a large bowl (1-gallon capacity minimum) under the tank, unscrew the drain screw, and let the tank drain into the bowl. If you can easily shut off the water supply do it now, but it is not necessary as long as no one uses the faucet when you are working on the tank. While draining, remove the three tubes from the top of the tank. One has a spring loaded clip you need to depress to remove the tube and the other two are silicone and plastic tubes that just pull off (might vary a bit based on the age of your unit). Loosen the mounting screws, and when the tank has drained, remove it from your cabinet and find a water resistant place to work on it.
2) Disassemble the tank. Really easy -- there is a small screw on the top that holds the two sides of the plastic shell together ... remove it. The two sides of the shell pull apart fairly easily but you might need to muscle it a bit. Once you get them apart, remove them from the unit and place aside. Then remove the temperature dial and put it aside. At this point you will have the guts of the unit with the steel tank encased in a dense styrofoam shell. Take a minute to examine the way it's put together (pictures wouldn't hurt either). You'll most probably easily pick out the problem part -- it will probably be very dark and brittle, and one end will be attached to the side of the water inlet port. Cut the hose somewhere before the metal (maybe plastic on yours) water inlet port it attaches to, and you will then be able to remove the upper styrofoam shell. After that you will see where the other end of the defective hose goes -- the bottom of the plastic overflow tank. You will need to cut the old zip ties (or maybe spring clamps) at each end of the hose to fully remove the old hose.
3) Inspect and dry the full unit. You may want at this point to remove the other styro shell piece and completely dry everything. At this point I discovered that the leaking water has badly rusted several of the screws holding the two pieces of the stainless tank together. IMHO they should have used stainless steel screws. I wasn't sure whether or not the rust has led to any leak in the tank itself, so I disassembled the stainless tank (fun to do with rusted screws I'll tell you). Mine took a T-10 Torx driver for the screws, and I eventually got them all out. A trip to the hardware store got me some #6 x 3/4" stainless machine screws and lock nuts. If you see anything else besides the hose that could be a problem, you'll need to deal with it for a complete repair.
4) Reassemble the unit, installing the new hose as you go. Put the tank back in the bottom styro shell. Attach one end of the silicone hose to the plastic overflow tank and secure with a zip tie cutting off the excess tie. Put the plastic tank back in the upper styro shell and slide the two back onto the top of the stainless tank. The plastic tank lines up with the silicone hose to the front of the unit. You'll route the hose along the tank flange to the right of the unit just like the old hose was. Once the shell is as far down as it goes, route the hose along the side of the styro shell following the groove for the old hose (not a perfect fit, but that's OK) and then over the top to the water inlet port. Hold it in place and see where you need to cut the silicone hose to fit the port without excess slack in the hose. Then cut the hose, attach it to the port and secure with a zip tie. Replace the thin upper piece of styro over the top of it all and reassemble it all into the plastic shell. Take your time and work the two halves together, making sure to get the power cord grommet correctly into the cutout in the shell. Get the bottom together first then work your way up. Pay attention to the new hose, keeping it tucked in behind the side of the front half of the shell (don't let it end up stuffed behind the back half of the shell. When done properly the shell will snap together nicely, and you may note a slight bulge where the new hose is if you used the thicker silicone tubing like me -- that's OK. Put the small screw back into the top the shell, and reinsert the drain screw.
5) Reinstall and test tank. Just reverse the removal steps. Open the faucet until water flows before plugging the tank in. Then use the faucet normally, checking regularly for any leaks. Mine has been leak free for two weeks, and should last for years now.
That's it, and it's probably easier than it sounds. For a grand total of less than $25 (with nine feet of hose left over) I have a fully functional tank again. The rest of the unit is very well made. The tank iteslf is built like a ... well, a tank, so I expect it to last years. Good luck with your home repair efforts if you try.
UPDATE 9/13/2010: A couple months now and still no leaks. I've been corresponding with another owner who ended up getting a replacement from Insinkerator. He sent me pics (thanks Jay!) that show they have changed the design of this particular tube that has been causing so many problems. The new design uses a different type of plastic for the tubing and avoids routing it along the steel hot water tank. They also seemed to have added a different type of gasket between the two tank halves. From what I saw, new units with this design won't suffer the same problem I described above, but how to tell whether any one new unit purchased at retail will have this fix incorporated??

Rheem Outdoor Liquid Propane Tankless Water Heater for 2-3 Bathroom Homes - RTG-66XP Review

Rheem Outdoor Liquid Propane Tankless Water Heater for 2-3 Bathroom Homes - RTG-66XP

We have a 2200 sq foot home which had the hot water tank 40 feet from the kitchen and 70 feet from the master bath so it always took a full minute and many wasted gallons of water to get something hot. With the floor plan relocating an indoor tank to the center of the house was not ideal though the indoor tankless would have been an option but I did not want to deal with the work of the air intake and chimney install.
The information on the Rheem outdoor tankless was mixed and stated that is was good to -30 and yet elsewhere I saw it listed at 30. That said, the -30 was on their website so we decided to go with it. Upon receiving it and the additional grey pipe cover which was not sold here at Amazon. I did find and buy it at Wholesale America and it is definitely something you'll need to make this a clean install.
SKU: RTG20169XG Weight: 9 lbs Rheem RTG20169XG Grey Pipe Covers for the RTG66-X $64.29
After installing my pipes, gas and electric I insulated this cover with hard Styrofoam and of course also ran a heat tape on the pipes coming out and going in. In mounting this tank to the house, I stayed low and used a 2.5" hole saw to make 5 holes through to the crawl space which will allow more of that warmth to access the now insulated pipe cover.
It is still early November in Kansas and if any problems develop during the colder parts of winter, I will update this posting.
As far as the tank and how it works, it is wonderful! We are using propane from a 1000 gallon tank and as with most of these installs, the tank has a first stage regulator and then at the house is a second stage. We have a gas furnace, dryer, stove and now this higher Btu hot water tank so I was naturally concerned that I might need to install a tee and place a second second stage regulator at the house and then run a dedicated line to the new water heater. I opted to try and tap into the lines using the appropriate flex pipe for high volume and it worked out just fine with only the one regulator. We tested this by running the furnace, dryer, oven and burners while running hot water. By holding a meat thermometer in the stream of hot water while the tank thermostat was set at 120F, I had a steady reading of 119 and when set at 130 I had 129 which means one or the other of these is off a wee little bit but the tank produces the hot water as it should! How cool is that?
With regard to the remote thermostat that you'll get with this... it only goes up to 120F until you bypass that if you want to go to 125, 130, 135 or 140. The instruction sheet that came with our tank was confusing and instructed me to open the tank cover and switch a dip switch and push a button and watch for a flashing light etc. Please don't waste your time!! I called their 800 number and talked to somebody in 'trouble shooting' and she instructed me to simply go to the thermostat and with it set at 120, hold the 'temp up' key until 140 pops up. Then I think she said to hold both up and down keys and that would lock me into the higher temp settings. You can then adjust in 5 degree increments and we chose 130 because we have a dishwasher and no little ones in the house.
The unit works well delivering endless supplies of hot water and is very quiet not that it matters outside!

Intermatic WH21 Electric Water Heater Timer Review

Intermatic WH21 Electric Water Heater Timer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This product is easy to install if you know what you are doing.
You should have some background in electrical ampacity and wiring basics.
I did have to purchase an additional pigtail.(flex tubing with 3 #10 color coded wires, and 1/2 connectors on each end about 5 feet total length)
The heater had the wiring flex tubing direct from the wall to the top of the heater. The additional material was about 10.75 at the local hardware store.
I unhooked the wiring from the heater and wired it to the timer, then wired the new pigtail to where I had disconnected the original wires.
The timer has knockouts on the bottom for either 1/2 or 3/4 inch connectors so if it will accomodate either one. You most likely will have 1/2" connections.
Make sure you turn off the breaker before you start.
The entire process took about an hour total.
The instructions that come with the timer aren't that great, so if you don't know what you are doing, it won't help much.
The timer comes with 3 sets of on/off clips so you can time it on and off 3 times.
We set it at on at 5 am, off at 8 am, then on at 8 pm off at 10 pm.
So the timer is on 5 hours a day and off 19.
We figgure we will save around 25 dollars a month off the electric bill.
So... it will take at least 2 months to pay for the timer and other materials we bought. If you pay someone to install it, it will take much longer to pay for itself.
So far, it is working properly and so I am satisfied.

Reliance 6 6 SOMS K 6 Gallon Compact Electric Water Heater Review

I installed a gas instant heater on an outside wall, was not able to install it in a central location. Therefore it took a while to get hot water to the faucet. I installed the 6gal electric heater in series with this heater at a central location. This curied the problem. The total cost was still below what most heaters would cost. I am very pleased and feel this is the way to go. I feel I should see savings in my power bill, time will tell. Another benifit is never running out of hot water. This way I only have to maintain 6 gal of hot water instead of 40 gal. Great product.

Farm Innovators Submergible Bucket Heater with Attached Guard Model W-449, 1,000-Watt Review

We use this as an auxiliary heater to get our hot tub up to temperature more quickly.
Works great - cuts heating time by 60%. I also use it my shop to get warm water - rather than the expense of installing a hot water heater.
Wish the cord was a bit longer, but the guard around the element keeps it off the bottom of the tub
and the 1000W power makes it easy to plug into any electrical outlet.
This is a well made product - lots of uses around the house.

Rinnai R75LSe Natural Gas Tankless Water Heater, 7.5 GPM Review

Rinnai R75LSe Natural Gas Tankless Water Heater, 7.5 GPM
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Keep in mind I have only recently installed my Rinnai on-demand water heater. It works perfectly. It comes with the water temp. set @ 120 degrees. Your installer will probably not re-set the temerature higher since it may be against state law. You'll have to do it yourself. It's not complicated but you'll have to find the tiny row of red buttons inside the unit. They are found on the right side of the unit as facing it. I wanted an outdoor unit since I did not want the expense of venting it that is required with an inside unit. Also safer.
Think about your winter temperatures. I purchased a pipe-enclosure unit that attaches to the bottom of your water heater. Stuff it with insulation. I used the kind that comes on a roll. Doing this will protect your pipe assembly unit from wind, freezing, and critters. The unit itself is protected to minus 30 degrees.
I found that 125 degree hot water is perfect. 120 is not enough. You'll love endless hot water. You can buy a flushing kit called Flow-Aide from Whitlam...[...]. It your water is somewhat hard you will want to flush your unit once or twice a year. It disolves lime, water scale and deposits in the applicance. If your water is extremely hard you ought to consider a house water filter and sediment filter. This is true especially if you have a well such a I do. The flushing kit comes with hoses, pump, bucket and flow-aide chemical. Make sure you buy a unit that is large enough to handle your needs. If you don't have a 2PSI gas service you will need to use a 3/4" dedicated gas line to your unit.
We love it, so far.
