(More customer reviews)I bought this timer to control my water heater. The unit itself appears attractive & reasonably well-constructed. However, the instructions are quite confusing and not at all user-friendly. Neither do the timing functions make sense. For some unknown reason, using the Zip-Set feature requires setting the clock to U.S. Eastern Time rather than your local time. This makes setting all subsequent on-off times confusing. Far worse--each of the 4 programmable timers seems to allow only 1 on and 1 off setting, forcing you to choose between 7-day, weekday, or weekend mode for that timer, with only 1 on/off option for it. Worse still, only one timer can be active at any given time, so you have to manually switch from one timer to another to activate the one you want next. I spent a couple of hours with a voltmeter programming & experimenting, so I'm confident this is correct. If anyone can correct me, I'd be delighted to be wrong. In other words, to set up, say, a morning on/off plus an afternoon on/off, with different set times for weekday and weekend, would require using all 4 timers AND you'd have to manually switch timers twice a day. The only way to "set and forget" is to pick 1 timer, set it on 7-day mode, program in 1 on/off time, and then use manual override for any other times you might want to heat water. If that's good enough for you, then buy this unit. Otherwise, find another. Given the hours of frustration I experienced, plus the poor result, I would have never bought this unit if I had known how it operated.

(More customer reviews)I installed this as part of the alarm system and this WILL NOT ALARM - UNLESS - you have the system armed (doors at a minimum in home mode).
If you are at home, have the system off, and get a flood, you will not be notified. You can not only arm the flood sensor.
I called Skylink just to confirm this.
I am exchanging it for something that alarms 24/7.
I like the rest of the system though.

(More customer reviews)We had a minor flood in our garage and the water detector we had was too old and didn't warn us. I purchased these detectors and find them to be good items. The alarm is loud, although I don't think you would hear it through a closed door. The detecting mechanism is on the bottom and requires that you stand it upright. If it got knocked over, it wouldn't work. The detector unit can be seperated and placed by itself, however you would need to place a small weight on top to keep it in contact with the ground. All in all though, a good value for the money and it will do the job.

(More customer reviews)I've put up with years with having to run the hot water at my kitchen sink for 3 minutes before I got hot water, which was actually only warm. I live in a house where the water heater, powered by propane, is about 40 feet from the kitchen. I installed the DHCE-10 in a weekend myself, it fit on the back wall right under the sink. The hardest part was running the 40 amp circuit over a 60 foot run for the power. Plumbing wasn't bad, this unit uses the cold water for the inlet, I turned off the hot water valve under the sink and capped it off and teed into the cold water line. The outlet side of the heater is teed, one to the hot water inlet on the faucet, one to the dishwasher.
Before having the DHCE-10 I would have to keep the propane heater turned almost as high as it would go so the water would be hot at the kitchen sink. There was a fair amount of temperature drop over a 40 foot run in a slab foundation. After powering up the DHCE-10, I had 120 degree water at my kitchen sink in 3 seconds, amazing. The first thing I did was turn my propane heater down to low, just warm enough for showers in the baths, which are in close proximity to the propane heater. Another benefit is my dishwasher is now cleaning the dishes more effectively with 120 degree water which is what is recommended.
As for the heater itself, it is well constructed, compact, simple and easy to set. There is a dial on the front which adjusts the water temperature from off to 125 degrees. The unit is self limiting to a max of 125. The ambient temperature of the water going into the unit is 50 degrees, (I live in the South, test done in winter), my flow rate is 1.3 gallons per minute at my sink. The unit heats the water instantly to 120 degrees. The unit only consumes power when the water is turned on, there is a flow detection switch that powers up the unit when water flows through it. It turns off instantly when the water flow stops. Can't get any more efficient than that. If you live in an area where you're ambient water temperature is lower, it may be necessary to reduce the flow at the faucet to achieve the desired outlet temperature, or install one of Stiebel Eltron's larger or smaller units, they have a variety of sizes depending on your needs. The hot water temperature is relative to your flow rate and the ambient temperature of your cold water. The Stiebel Eltron web site has graphs and recommendations for your area.
I've been using the unit for a month now, I've monitored my propane usage, it has dropped dramatically. Prior to installing the unit we would turn on the hot water at the sink for washing hands and rinsing dishes, it usually didn't run long enough to actually get any hot water but it did run long enough to cause the propane heater to cycle on to reheat the water in the tank. I've seen no appreciable rise in my electric bill so far. I would expect the unit to pay for itself over it's lifespan.
I highly recommend this unit, I chose it over competitive units for it's warranty, quality and reputation. All copper internal components, quality switches and connectors. If I were to ever build a house I would install these units in each bath and the kitchen sink instead of having a tank style heater that cycles on and off whether or not you use any hot water. I would prefer this style unit over a whole house tankless heater also, as these install right at or near the the point of use eliminating the long runs resulting in temperature drops.

P418 POND FLOAT DEICER 1250W Review

(More customer reviews)I have 100 gallon plastic in ground pond which is only 18" deep and is approximately 4'W x 7'L. Currently it's -6 below and none of the Pond has iced over. I see our fish directly under the heater when it's cold. I keep the water circulating 24/7 in the pond with a pond pump which also has a fountain head in the middle of the pond. Recently we had over 36" of snow and the pond was burried in a drift. There was a 9" or so portion of the pond that was kept open. Most of the pond was slush in the water but my fish came through it all with no problem. I think it was due to the combination of the circulating water and the heater as well. I would recommend this pond heater to anyone who has a plastic preformed pond. None of the pond has froze even in sub zero temps which I find amazing and I'm sure this Pond Heater has helped keep it Ice Free.
Update: 2/15/2009
Since this time I have had three of these things and I won't purchase another since they only last one season. In fact the last one I bought didn't last that long. When it works it works great but just not long enough for me to justify the purchase. I'm keeping my pond ICE free with the fountain with the head removed, and a waterfall just to keep the water circulating. I wish I could change the stars I gave originally but it won't let me.

The good points regarding this water heater -
- Its operation is very economical as it uses very little propane. I have given it a star to recognize its economy.
The bad points regarding this water heater -
- The water heater shuts down and restarts frequently. This leads to invigorating showers as it alternately produces about 90 seconds of hot water, then about 60 seconds of cold water. Based on what the service techs have told me and the troubleshooting methods they provided, it seems that the unit overheats, shuts down, and restarts after it cools down. The best guess is that the temperature of my incoming water is too high, and the water heater is not capable of heating a little. Being in Hawaii, my incoming water temperature is about 70 degrees. If you get your water as runoff from a glacier, you may find it works just fine.
- The water heater demands a fairly high rate of water flow to activate. This means that it does not activate to heat water when running our Whirlpool washing machine. To get hot water into the washer requires turning on a hot water tap and letting it run long enough for the water to heat, and keeping the tap on as long as the washer is filling. Likewise, the flow into our Bosch dishwasher is too low to activate the water heater. This means the internal (electric) water heater in the dishwasher works to bring the water to the necessary temperature, wasting electricity.
- It is slow to fire up. This means that, when handwashing dishes or the like, if you turn off the hot water you will get get cold water for a spell after the hot water sitting in the pipe has flowed out. As a result, you need to leave the hot water running continuously for such activities. I could understand a brief bit of cold water, but we are talking about 10 to 15 seconds of cold each time the hot water is turned off.
- The water heater uses approximately 5 watts of electricity continuously, more when the exhaust blower is operating. This amount of electric usage is ridiculous and goes far to offset the claimed efficiency.
My experiences with this and my Bosch dishwasher have completely disillusioned me on Bosch appliances and I will avoid them in the future.

i don't mind buying "scrath and dent"...i just want to know ahead of time! at this price point i would NOT have purchased the heater!!

If you use a lower wattage element in the lower position on a 2 element water heater they will last many years even if the lime builds up to cover the element. It pays to use an adapted wet vac to remove the lime buildup when replacing elements. Always use low watt density , folded back elements like these to get good element life and reduce noise of boiling water in the water heater.

(More customer reviews)I use this in my basement near my 15 year old water heater. Had it about one month when I woke up to hear beeping coming from the basement. I rushed down only to find the unit sitting on a dry floor. Maybe the humidity in the basement caused it though I do have a dehumidifier running. I reset the unit and it has been working ok since. On the plus side, the unit was loud enough for me to hear on the main floor of my house so I am happy about that.
UPDATE - 12/9/2009 - after 2 more false alarms in the past few weeks I'm about ready to give up on this unit. It is definitely more of a nuisance than it is a help. It does have a great alarm though that can be heard well throughout my house, but I'm getting tired of rushing down the basement only to find it sitting there screeching away to a dry floor.

(More customer reviews)I have to say, why would there be so many "USED" kits available? I went to a service call where the plumber actually caused a fire by installing one of these improperly. It's not that difficult. When you are considering installing one of these, first consider the total cost of the 125 series heater and the vent cost and you are up around the cost of many other brands which are already power vented and have far more advanced features. The 125 series Bosch water heaters are little work horses but must be maintained. The fan housings in the AQ must be cleaned s they can and do load up with dust, dirt and provide habitat for nesting insects. The average homeowner is going to have a hard time installing this, even plumbers who have installed Bosch water heaters will shy away from these kits in favor of internal power vent models. This is like putting rubber tires on a covered wagon. Due diligence is worth every minute spent before mis-spending you $$

(More customer reviews)After using one of the little Mr. Heater "Buddy" heaters, I expected this to be the same only larger. It's not.
Unlike the "Buddy", this does not have any way to regulate the heat except "on" or "off". Also, it doesn't have a pilot light. Instead, you just hold in a springloaded valve and let gas come out into the heater. There is a piezo sparker that is supposed to light it up, but I have not found it to work very well. However, using a match works OK, and a lighter-on-a-stick (for BBQs and fireplaces, etc.) would work even better.
But once it is lit, it really works quite well. Radiant heaters don't heat the air directly, so the heat tends to be fairly even by the time the surrounding objects start heating the air. This does take some time, though, depending on the size of the space you are heating.
Also, unlike the "Buddy", this requires ventilation, both at the ceiling and at the floor.
Shutoff is done just by shutting off the valve on the propane tank. There is a safety switch, however, which prevents the heater from continuing to pump the place full of propane if the flame goes out.
This is really more suited to a sheltered environment, like an unfinished garage or a carport, but not an indoor environment (like a house). I have used it in my garage. It's fairly quiet in operation, though it does moan during startup.
It runs off of a regular BBQ-sized propane tank (or bigger). According to the manual, it will not work properly running from a smaller tank.

Five Tips for Buying a HeaterChoosing a space heater is a matter of sifting through a bewildering array of types, power ratings, and fuel sources. Let's break it down a little to make the process easier.

What are the different types of space heaters?
Radiant heaters emit infrared radiation that directly warms the objects in front of the heaters (rather than the surrounding air). If you only need heat by a desk or in a small section of a room, a radiant heater is quiet and will use very little power.
Forced-air heaters use a fan to blow air that has been warmed by metal or ceramic heating elements. A forced-air heater is appropriate for quickly heating up a small- to medium-sized room, but can be noisy.
Convection heaters draw cold air from the floor; the air is warmed by heating coils and emitted from the top of the heater. A convection heater is appropriate for quickly heating up a small- to medium-sized room, but also can be noisy.
Radiators work by heating oil enclosed in a reservoir, gradually heating the surrounding air. If heating speed isn't an issue, you might want to opt for a radiator. These are extremely quiet and effective--perfect for bedrooms.

How powerful a heater do I need?Heaters are rated by BTU, which stands for British Thermal Unit (the amount of heat needed to heat one pound of water by 1 degree F). To find out how many BTU you need:
Calculate the volume of the space to be heated by multiplying square footage by height.
Multiply that number by 4 if your insulation is poor, 3 if it's average, or 2 if it's good.
The resulting number is a ballpark figure for how many BTU you'll need.
Do space heaters cost a lot to operate? As a general rule, electric space heaters are more expensive to use than combustion models. To ensure energy efficiency, a thermostat is a must-have feature for any heater. For radiant heaters, models with a 360 degree heating surface can heat larger spaces. If you need a forced-air heater, models with ceramic elements tend to be more efficient.
