Mr. Heater MH25NG 25,000-BTU Natural-Gas Radiant Heater Review

Mr. Heater MH25NG 25,000-BTU Natural-Gas Radiant Heater

(More customer reviews)
This is a really nice unit if it fits your purpose. I must stress however, that is if it fits your purpose. As I now realize, 25,000 BTU/hr is not an enormous amount of heat. This unit really is designed for use in a closed in space w/ minimal air curculation. The heating method is to raise the temperature of all objects in the radiant field so that the space stays warm. A breeze or draft will reduce it's ability to maintain the heat. The unit comes with a thermostat for mounting on a wall and setting a desired heat. I've eliminated the thermostat and just hard wired the unit. If it's cold enough to have it on, then I want it on. Mr. Heater advertises using the term "millivolt" ignition or something to this manner. This is misleading. This is not a electronic ignition unit!!! This means the unit has a pilot light. The pilot light heats a thermocouple which provides the "millivolt" current they refer to. The thermostat either "opens" or "closes" the circuit, depending on the temperature and thermostat setting. The "closed" loop opens a solenoid valve in the pressure regulator which releases the gas to the burner.
My unit is installed on a large covered patio outside approximately 8' above a sitting area. Sitting below the heater in a 8' diameter circle is nice and toasty, even with a slight breeze. Sitting across the table at 12' you can feel a slight warming effect with no breeze. More than 12' away....no impact. This is not a highly effective heater if used in an open space. As advertised....this is a garage heater. To get the heat I need I am adding a second heater across the patio from the first.
Clearances around the unit are important. I have 2' clear above my unit, and the lumber above the unit gets warmer than I would like. After 2 hours of use I can touch the wood with my bare hand without having to remove it, but it is quite warm. I'm thinking about 120 to 130F. I have some harditrim up there too and it is even warmer. Not too sure how long the paint will last.
Installation is a breeze. Includes a video if you need it, but there is essentially nothing to it.
Good buy....if it's what you need. If you are thinking of installing it outside......you may want to consider getting more BTU's.

The Mr. Heater MH25NG garage heater is a quiet, odor-free, and low maintenance option for heating your garage. At 25,000 Btu, this unit is powerful enough to heat up to 500 square feet. It uses radiant heat, so it doesn't waste fuel heating the surrounding air (it doesn't use any electricity, either). The heater comes fully assembled out of the box--all you have to do is mount it and hook it up to your existing natural gas line. Includes free "How To" video. Do not use in inhabited or small, enclosed areas. AGA design certified. One-year warranty on gas control; five-year warranty on burner.--Josh Dettweiler

Five Tips for Buying a HeaterChoosing a space heater is a matter of sifting through a bewildering array of types, power ratings, and fuel sources. Let's break it down a little to make the process easier.

What are the different types of space heaters?
Radiant heaters emit infrared radiation that directly warms the objects in front of the heaters (rather than the surrounding air). If you only need heat by a desk or in a small section of a room, a radiant heater is quiet and will use very little power.
Forced-air heaters use a fan to blow air that has been warmed by metal or ceramic heating elements. A forced-air heater is appropriate for quickly heating up a small- to medium-sized room, but can be noisy.
Convection heaters draw cold air from the floor; the air is warmed by heating coils and emitted from the top of the heater. A convection heater is appropriate for quickly heating up a small- to medium-sized room, but also can be noisy.
Radiators work by heating oil enclosed in a reservoir, gradually heating the surrounding air. If heating speed isn't an issue, you might want to opt for a radiator. These are extremely quiet and effective--perfect for bedrooms.

Should I buy an electric or a combustion model? If you want a heater that will be available in emergencies, or that can heat areas larger than a single room, choose a "combustion" model--one that is powered by a gas or fuel like propane, kerosene, natural gas, or diesel. Which fuel type you choose depends largely on convenience and local availability. For example, diesel would be appropriate for a heater you take with you on long car trips.

How powerful a heater do I need?Heaters are rated by BTU, which stands for British Thermal Unit (the amount of heat needed to heat one pound of water by 1 degree F). To find out how many BTU you need:
Calculate the volume of the space to be heated by multiplying square footage by height.
Multiply that number by 4 if your insulation is poor, 3 if it's average, or 2 if it's good.
The resulting number is a ballpark figure for how many BTU you'll need.
Do space heaters cost a lot to operate? As a general rule, electric space heaters are more expensive to use than combustion models. To ensure energy efficiency, a thermostat is a must-have feature for any heater. For radiant heaters, models with a 360 degree heating surface can heat larger spaces. If you need a forced-air heater, models with ceramic elements tend to be more efficient.

Are space heaters a fire hazard?Space heaters are implicated in about 25,000 residential fires every year. To ensure proper safety, always follow the manufacturer's usage instructions and fill out the warranty card to receive informational updates from the manufacturer. Also, look for extra safety features such as an automatic shutoff switch that can shut down the unit if, for example, it gets upended. In addition, choose a model where the heating element is adequately enclosed within the unit.

Camco 11572 Aluminum Anode Rod Review

Camco 11572 Aluminum Anode Rod

I picked-up a few of these here when one of our 3 Water Heaters failed after only 4 years; a leak had developed at one of the top welds and so wasn't just a matter of re-seating a fitting up there. In looking at the failed heater's Anode Rod, it was almost all wire i.e. no sacrificial metal left so clearly the top of the WH had rusted-out somewhere already.
I've now replaced the ARs on the other two of our WHs and sure enough they were almost gone as well--hopefully w/the new rods they will last indefinitely. I'm already planning to replace all 3 (again) in another 3 years!
Some things to know:
1. There are "flexible" anode rods available at much greater cost, but you should be able to angle this 42" rod in almost anywhere. If not you can cut it down and save big $$.
2. You will most likely need a 1/2" Impact Wrench to get the old AR out--it will be turned-in very tight! I bought the cheapest Impact Wrench I could find as this is the only application I will likely have for one.
3. You will also need a 1 1/16" half-inch socket to extract the old AR. These aren't in most sets but you can buy them individually at the local hardware store.
4. You'll use teflon tape to wrap the threads of the new AR to assure "no leaks". Don't worry that this will keep the AR from working i.e. it will not block the electrical flow. When you screw-in the new AR the threads will cut-thru the tape and make a good enough connection.
5. Finally, as always start the AR into the Water Heater BY HAND, and don't use the Impact Wrench to install it--just snug it down with your 1/2 inch ratchet by hand. Check it periodically for a day or three to make sure there are no leaks.
Thanks Amazon for making these available--for some reason despite our awful water these are impossible to come by in local retail stores!

This unit is worthless. I bought a more powerful unit than was remotely necessary to feed a single sink. The unit felt cheap at first, but I reserved judgement. Now I have used it for a month, my conclusion is that this water heater can't even heat water for a single sink. The relays constantly switch off and on, thus even when water becomes slightly warm, it goes back to cold. This is possibly due to fluctuations in water pressure.
In a laboratory setting this heater may have supplied tepid water, but in the real world it is useless.

Watt'S Sensor Valve Kit for Hot Water Recirculating Pump (0955801) Review

Watt'S Sensor Valve Kit for Hot Water Recirculating Pump (0955801)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Read all the way to the end - where I talk about the problems with the valve, but first.....
Here is how the system works.
This is an automatic heat regulating water valve.
You connect it under your sink.
There are four connections.
1. To Hot water valve
2. To cold water valve
3. To hot water side of faucet
4. To Cold water side of faucet.
This valve connects your hot water to your cold water. Hot water flows into the cold water line and goes back to the water heater. When the water reaches about 95 degrees at the cold water side, the valve closes.
I don't mind having the cold water at 95 degrees all the time. It would be nice to have the hot water coming out of the tap at higher than 95 degree immediately, but that is a limitation of the valve. Once the water reaches 95 degrees the flow stops and the hot water side doesn't get any hotter until you turn the tap on. Your hot water will start out warm but not hot. It will reach it's highest temperature quicker because it is already part way there.
This is a great product for getting your shower warm quicker.
However, you will need to adjust the temperature of the shower as the hot water line continues to warm up and the cold water line cools off. Less hot and more cold to keep the temperature constant.
I knew all of this and I was fine with it.
My main interest was getting hot water to my dishwasher, and unfortunately, this only gets WARM water to the dishwasher. By the time the water gets HOT, the dishwasher is already full of warm water. As far as I know, dishwashers today will start the wash cycle before the water reaches a high enough temperature even if you have the dishwasher set to increase the temperature.
NOW - HERE IS THE BIG PROBLEM WITH THIS VALVE - They stop working. They get stuck in the open position. That means that Hot water flows continuously through the Hot AND Cold water pipes. My hot water is set to well above 150 degree. SO, with a failed valve, my cold water is coming out of the tap at over 150 degrees!!!!
This solves the dishwasher issue, but now instead of waiting for HOT water, I have to wait for COLD water.
This isn't an isolated problem. I have had 4 of these valves stick open each within just a few months. I am a journeyman pipefitter, and there is no way to repair these valves. They are molded together, and there are no rebuild kits.
Now, I am considering a solution for MY installation. The pump has a built in timer. I am thinking about having it come on only once nightly for the dishwasher. Of course I'll have to schedule dishwashing.
If Watts would come up with a better valve, one that can be rebuilt and have a temperature adjustment control, this would be a better solution.
As it is, these valves have a good chance of failing. It's probably due to minerals in the water. If you have soft water, this may not be a problem for you.
Finally - in my situation, I don't even NEED the valve, I only need a couple of tees and a pump with a timer, but since the valve has failed open, I'll just stick with that. Worst part is, I am selling this home and I'll need to either explain it to the new owners or remove the system when I sell.

Laing ACT-909 Tankless pump-No return line required
Average Reviews:

This version of the ACT-909 is for retrofit installations. No return line needed.
I installed an ACT-909 a year or so ago, after we had a tankless water heater installed in the 3rd floor attic. Because it was inconvenient to install at the farthest location of the new part of our house, on the 2nd floor just beyond the shower, I installed it on the first floor beneath the shower. I don't know how our plumbing is run, but the ACT-909 works well in this configuration. The shower used to take a long time to get hot. Now it's hot within 5 - 10 seconds. We are happy.
The unit is completely silent and vibration free. I haven't bothered with the timer, so I am sure we are wasting money there.
I am buying a second ACT-900 for the old part of the house which has the same long lag in receiving hot water on the first floor kitchen.

nuvoH2O Home Salt-Free Water Softener System (Standard) Review

nuvoH2O Home Salt-Free Water Softener System (Standard)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
One of Amazon's review guidelines is to "write about anything that the prospective buyer would like to know before making their buying decision." I'm writing this review to share the results of my extensive investigation regarding salt-free water softeners, how I ended up looking at the NuvoH2O WH2100, and why I decided not to buy it.
I was looking for a non-salt means to eliminate water spotting on dishes, shower doors, my car, etc. I decided to apply a good deal of buyer beware diligence in selecting a product, because my on-line research revealed that:
1. There are substantiated reports that favorable product reviews on the Internet are being submitted by friends, family members and employees of the company selling the product.
2. Some money back warranties (company lingo: "wait until your old pipes clear, to see if the system is working for you") don't kick in until after the drop dead date when your credit card company will tell you "you're out of luck at ever seeing your money again."
3. You can never initially trust who is at the other end of the Internet wire, and if something does go awry - you don't have much recourse. Example: there are many blogs with no-salt water conditioning complaints by purchasers that were given canned excuses of why the company's money back warranty didn't apply to them. I first looked at and ruled out those electron/magnetron water zapping devices that clamp or wrap around your water pipe. Every manufacturer I looked at appeared to have a gaping hole in their theory of operation, installation requirements, or money back warranty.
I then looked at several of those large tank "media" systems and noted that a growing number of those manufacturers have stopped calling their systems salt-free water softeners and are now calling them water conditioners; presumably because of threat of litigation. As rationalized by water treatment experts, the media technology appears to be nothing more than an overly large and expensive water filter (a bigger version of the Brita that attaches to the end of your faucet). The water supply throughout your house has the potential for "tastes great", but hard water deposits and spotting are still a concern.
So, this had me believe that my best choice was the "chelation" process of the NuvoH2O WH2100.
I found several Internet references that the chelation process touted by Nuvo may be the addition of citric acid to the water supply. Some detergents are chelated with citric acid to make them work better in the presence of calcium. So, this may be why Nuvo claims "you'll use less soap" and why the non-filtering cartridge needs to be replaced every 6 months - it's being flushed clean of the acid. However, my quest was mitigating water spots - not less soap usage.
I called Nuvo and cross-questioned them about water spots. Their response: "Well no; our device won't eliminate water spots, but it will make it easier to wipe them off." While I do applaud them for being candid, here's how I think they were expecting this claim to be tested. Allow a drinking glass to air dry for an hour. Wipe off the spots. Easy, right?! Well yes, but this would also be easy prior to installing the so-called Water Softener System. The problem with water spots is when they're allowed to dry and accumulate over days and weeks.
Because of all of my findings above and my decision to apply purchasing diligence, I proposed the following scenario to NuvoH2O:
1. Sell me the WH2100 at their cost (thus no financial investment on their part).
2. Allow me to test if the WH2100 Salt-Free Water Softener System met my minimal expectations (which was to perform something akin to a traditional water softener system).
3. If it did, I'd then send them the full retail funds for the WH2100 (the investigative seed money from #1 above would be extra profit for them). I included rationale as to why they could trust me.
4. I'd also give them a very cogent and credible review on Amazon (without mentioning my unique purchasing exception). I have a long trail of "real life experience" reviews on Amazon which would strongly suggest that my review wasn't a fake (note: except for a guy that also reviewed a book, all the other reviewers for NuvoH2O are one-time reviewers, as of 12/20/09).
5. But if the WH2100 didn't meet my minimal expectations, then I'd return the device to them and pay the shipping. They could keep the "seed" money that I had already paid.
Because of the "creativeness" of my proposal, I was ready to accept responses such as "sorry, but our accounting system won't allow us to do that" or "thanks, but we think our reviews on Amazon are already convincing enough." However, the response I got surprised me!
Nuvo's company owner rejected my proposal on the grounds that "he needed to make a profit." This particular response left me questioning the WH2100's place as a true water softener, as the only scenario path where he wouldn't be making a handsome profit was if my issue with hard, accumulated water spots wasn't addressed. I would return the product, but unlike all their other customers, Nuvo wouldn't be in control of my $600.
Conclusions:
1. All my research indicates that if you're looking for the "less soap" aspects of a traditional water softener, then the NuvoH2O products are a good choice.
2. If your primary desire is to have a solution for hard water deposits and/or spotting, devise and conduct a "meets my expectations" test soon after you receive the unit, and take all steps necessary to ensure that you can collect on the money back warranty.
Note: This review has been based on verifiable facts, except where I've used equivocal terms such as "may"; which are speculations on my part. If proven wrong, I'll update this review.

Some call it evolution. We call it innovation! The days of giant, salt-based water softeners roaming the earth are over. Welcome to a new era, the nuvoH2O era. So remarkable you need to see it to believe it.The nuvoH2O system uses patent pending technology to soften hard water based on the basic scientific process of chelation in which the metal ions causing hard water, principally calcium and magnesium, are bound to the chelating agent in nuvoH2O's FDA-approved, proprietary formulation, which keeps the minerals soluble and unable to cause hard water problems. The resulting water is soft and healthy for all of your household uses, including drinking, bathing, washing, and lawn and plant watering.Developed from nearly 30 years of commercial experience, this amazing, compact system uses an eco-friendly process to condition all the water throughout your entire home.# Designed for homes between 1,100 square feet and 2,500 square feet# Water flow: 12-15 gpm with 1" ports (no change to existing flow)# Capacity: about 50,000 gallons (average annual water usage of household of 4 every 6 months).

After comparing all the leading brands, we selected the Noritz due to the price / performance / reliability made it a good value. We had the unit professionally installed, which took one day. The total cost to us was $2,900 all in. We expect $1,000 back from the federal tax rebate.
The performance of the unit is quite good. Our old $50 gal unit was in the attic but this unit was installed outside near our AC units. I was a little concerned about how long it would take to move the hot water around the house. It is really not a big issue. It takes about a minute to get to the master bath, which is the furtherest point from the unit.
The water is hot and endless... nothing to do but enjoy!

Bosch GL8Ti Ariston Pro Ti Electric Mini-Tank Water Heater Review

Bosch GL8Ti Ariston Pro Ti Electric Mini-Tank Water Heater
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I love the idea of this water heater!
Installation should be easy..
Uses standard 3/4 inch threaded lines for in, out, and overflow.
However.. the GL8Ti has 2 overflow ports..
You plug one (depending on top or side mounting) and use the other one for overflow..
This is a very nice feature, and makes mounting quite flexible.
The fittings going into the heater are brass and should seal OK..
However they are NOT tapered (as I think they should be).
Both of these ports leaked with what I would consider good/normal installation (teflon tape).
Both of these ports leaked with "upgraded" installation (teflon tape, plus joint compound).
Both of these ports held with a "super upgraded installation" (Teflon tape, plus joint compound, plus a thick seal gasket). (Gaskets are not a good idea in a water heating device.. They tend to rot out)
Took me a day and a half to diagnose and "address" the leaks..
I hope the the gaskets hold a good long time..
Made in China, with some components made in Italy...
Other than the install leak pain..... (which is/was big..)
I Love the way this operates!
-Runs on a normal 110 line!
-The insulation is fantastic, with water staying warm (without power) seemingly forever!
All of my future installs will probably be with the 4Ti (1/2 inch lines), just to avoid the darn 2nd overflow plug port..

K&H Pet Products Ice Eliminator BirdBath 50-Watt De-Icer Review

KandH Pet Products Ice Eliminator BirdBath 50-Watt De-Icer
Average Reviews:

It finally got cold enough to try this out. So far, it seems to work very well. Temperatures have been in the 20s and 30s and it keeps a 12" circle of water ice-free. The birds have definitely been taking advantage of it.
It mentions this in the description, but I missed it initially, so I just thought I would reiterate that this heater is thermostatically controlled, so it only turns on when necessary. That's nice, as thermostatic plugs cost twenty bucks or more.
[UPDATE]
My circuit breaker tripped and the birdbath water froze. When I turned it back on, the heater thawed its way out of a solid block of ice at 5 degrees F. I'd say that it works pretty well!

Intermatic T104 208-277-Volt DPST 24 Hour Mechanical Time Switch Review

Intermatic T104 208-277-Volt DPST 24 Hour Mechanical Time Switch
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This timer is usually used to control 230V swimming pool filter pumps. It operates a single on/off cycle during a 24-hour period, which is adjustable, requires 230 volts for operation and switches both poles (hot wires). My original timer finally expired after more than 30 years of use, so I bought this replacement from Amazon, which was less expensive than buying one from my local electrical distributor.
Fortunately, this new mechanism fits and snaps right into the old Intermatic housing. For those who just need to replace the functional parts, this greatly simplifies the installation. Amazon's price for the entire timer assembly including the metal housing was less than others charge for just the mechanism itsef.
It was shipped promptly, arrived undamaged and at a good price.

Simer 2305 Geyser II 1/4 HP Submersible Utility Pump Review

Simer 2305 Geyser II 1/4 HP Submersible Utility Pump
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've had an original Simer Geyser pump since 1987 and it is still working good. I use it to pump my pool cover and to pump out my pond. The original Geyser had an all-metal case and has withstood getting frozen solid in ice for weeks at time and getting clogged with muck. It can also run dry for days at a time if someone forgets to shut it off. The Geyser II has a plastic case and so far has not been tested in solid ice. (I'll update this review after the winter.)
Tip: To cut down on leaves and muck clogging the unit, I put the pump in a 5 gal. bucket that I have drilled with many ¼" holes to act as a filter.

Bosch AquaStar Indoor Liquid Propane Tankless Water Heater with Vent Hood #125FX LP Review

Bosch AquaStar Indoor Liquid Propane Tankless Water Heater with Vent Hood #125FX LP
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I like this water heater quite a bit. This is a huge money saver if you only use hot water a few times a day. If you have people taking showers all day long, it is probably less so.
I researched these heaters on-line and found some people were pretty negative about them while other people were positive. I figured I would address the biggest complaints.
Complaint: It takes a while to get hot water.
Response: This is probably the biggest downside. It does take a bit longer to get hot water... this is less noticeable the longer it took to get hot water in the first place, however. If your point of use is far from your old tank, the extra delay is hardly noticeable.
Complaint: If you shut off the hot water and start it again you will get a burst of cold water.
Response: I've never observed this phenomenon. The hot water heater will shut off, and about bit of water must pass through it before it turns on again, but the thing is, the heat exchanger is still hot. So you are not going to get a burst of cold water in between uses of hot water, unless you've had the water off for a long time... in which case the water in your pipes is going to be cold as well.
Complaint: Not enough volume
Response: I've had no problem with volume of hot water with this model and the shower or dishwasher or any other appliance. I have it turned up all the way for the dishwasher, so this is the most restrictive setting. At any lower setting, or elsewhere in the US where the ground water isn't as cold as it is here, will have more water. They make a bigger model if you need to run two showers at once. That is not an issue for me.
Over all I'm very happy with this unit. The quality is excellent. The kit was complete. I've had no trouble with it. Installation is easy if you have basic plumbing skills. The hardest part - by far - of the installation is the venting. The exhaust gas is high temp, so you have to watch how close you get to combustible materials. This is a very good choice for anyone with an electric water heater, or someone who has a gas water heater that needs to be replaced.

K&H Manufacturing Ultimate All-In-One Stock Tank De-Icer Removable Floater Ring Review

KandH Manufacturing Ultimate All-In-One Stock Tank De-Icer Removable Floater Ring
Average Reviews:

Bought this for my 700 gallon pond after the Farm Innovators Heated Pond Saucer Model PS-200, 200-Watt deicer started to trip my GFI after only 2 months of use! (After taking that one from the water, could hear water slooshing around inside the disk.)
Seems like a good design because of the option to have it float or not, the 250 watt option and it's not a disk that will eventually leak in water.
I was leery of buying this because it said it is for a stock tank but the coils are surrounded so I don't see a way that it could damage a pond liner.
This one has kept the water open for the 1-2 months since I've bought it. I just hope I'm able to use it next year!

The new Farm Essentials line from K&H Manufacturing has reinvented the wheel when it comes to keeping fresh water available in the winter. Every K&H de-icer is safe in all stock tanks, unlike nearly all of the other de-icers available in the market today. No expensive shrouds or cages need be purchased either. Every one of our de-icers can be used as a floating de-icer out of the box or in seconds converts to a submersible de-icer with the click of a button. In the past, all that was readily available were energy gulping 1000 watt to 1500 watt de-icers; Customers had no choice but to purchase these expensive to run de-icers, even when they didn-foott need it. We-footve solved this problem by creating a whole line of de-icers along with a convenient zone chart for consumers to choose the correct de-icer, every time. A free cord safety clip is also included with every de-icer. This ingenious clip secures the de-icer to the edge of the stock tank, bucket or container to help prevent chewing, cribbing or removal of the de-icer from the tank. When it comes to fresh water, K&H Farm Essentials is the choice that makes cents.
