(More customer reviews)I purchased this generator in August of 2008. I live in an area (upstate NY) where we lose power frequently. The item arrived and was delivered to my back yard in perfect working order.
We recently had a very bad ice storm in the Northeast and we lost power for 3 days. The generator worked perfectly running my sump pump, hot water heater (gas, direct vent), furnace, fridge (2) and several lights. I had to run power cords from outside rather than use the NEMA power cord to a manual transfer switch I had installed before the generator was delivered (more on that later). I ran the house for 10-12 hours on the 2 20lb propane tanks before I needed to change them out, which was to me, excellent. The generator is very quiet, we could barely hear it in the house. I have it installed behind my garage facing downwind of the house.
Okay, the transfer switch issue. While the manual, Briggs & Stratton web site, Briggs & Stratton FAQ page does not specifically state this, you MUST purchase the B&S manual transfer switch PERIOD! The model number is Briggs & Stratton 71014 - PowerNow Generator Transfer Kit (10 Circuits). This is the only transfer switch that works with the GFCI breaker installed in the generator. I had 3 electricians (friends of mine) look at the gen-tran 30 amp transfer switch wiring that was installed in my house and it is NOT a switching neutral switch.
Confused? I was too until I got on the phone with a very nice B&S technician who told me to only use their switch. I was dissapointed as I then needed to shell out another $400.00 but now it's working fine. I did let B&S know that they should be specific about the fact that only their switch is compatible with these types of generators. It is because of this fact that I only rated it 4 stars.
All in all that one storm alone made this purchase worth every penny. It also kept the house in harmony (if you know what I mean).
I would heartly recommend this generator to anyone who is looking for a well built powerful and quiet standby generator. Just make sure you buy the 71014 - PowerNow Generator Transfer Kit from B&S

I purchased it (but not the stove) from a local stove place in Central Massachusetts and once I realized I had been sold the noisier version, I called the place back. They assured me that once the Cougars came in that I could swap the top of the unit while retaining my canister and filter. Well, after several months of follow up calls this place says they have never received any Cougars and even wondered if they were still made! I wish I had checked this site first! I never should have purchased the Cheetah and I think this stove place is the real cheata. I Would suggest purchasing the Cougar since it is about the same price.

Read the comment that someone posted about electrical needs so that you understand why the person is most likely wrong about being misled. Especially when the power numbers are in every brochure, online, and written info about the generator, it really makes it seem that the poster & electrician don't understand power and load sharing.
My review of the Generac 5503 14,000 Standby Generator: This thing is flawless. We have 100amp service in the house. We went with the 14,000 and load shedding and can run our whole house. It is pretty quiet - sounds like a car is running. Inside the house (except near windows on the side it is installed), you can't even hear it running. We had the company that we bought the generator from install it as well - they got the permits from the town, arranged power disconnect, basically did everything - we just signed paperwork. They are also a certified service center. It still is amazing to have it come on automatically and shut off automatically. Oh, and it does a self test 1x per week - you set the day and time. Install took 4-5 hours.
How we arrived at the 14,000 watt. We have a well, so automatically we couldn't have the 8,000 according to the literature from Generac. We thought we would get the 10,000. I came up with a list of things we 100% couldn't do without (well, fridge, furnace, certain lights, etc.). I counted the circuits (counted doubles as 2) on the circuit board to see that I didn't go over 10 (the 10,000 has 10 circuits). The installation estimate person came over (installer knew electricity, the product, was very knowledgeable). We went over the list. Well come to find out, it wasn't as simple as counting the number of circuits. There is the further info about what amps each circuit is rated for. For example, the well was a 20, the dryer was 2 30s, etc. Each generator has specific amps/circuits it has included in its power management. Go to the Generac website and look at that info. We found out that my list wasn't doable on the 10,000, I could either cut the list or go up in size in the generator. The installer recommended that we go with the 14,000 ($300 more than the 10,000) and then he also mentioned load shedding (another $300) and we could have the whole house. Needless to say, we spent the extra $600 total and went with the !4,000 and load shedding.
I HIGHLY recommend that if you go to get a standby generator that you have a very knowledgeable installer and estimator. Otherwise, you may be in for a few surprises. Also, there are different power management/load shedders depending on the amps that your house is. I realize now after that fact how easy it would be to order the wrong thing. The company we went with also fixes all the bad installs locally - lots and lots of them. Fixing a bad install after the fact is a LOT more expensive than doing it right the first time.
The person who posted above most likely ordered the wrong power management system or didn't understand about figuring out what circuits would work - I'm guessing. Clearly their electrician doesn't understand power. Looking on my own, I didn't understand it when I read the info. Now that I read it after the install, I completely understand it.

1. Its way more powerful than my GE portable. Keeps the LR cool when the GE would not.
2. This unit, though powerful, is very poorly made.
Example:
All four wheels broke off the first season (my season is June-Aug)
The unit emits a "burnt tire" smell. finally stopped smelling in the 3rd season. Friends are no longer asking, "what's that smell?"
The digital lights went out at the start of the 2nd season, so no warranty to fix.
The directional blades fell off the machine during the second season. Can not be repaired.
The exhaust hose lasted only one season, then fell apart, even though properly stored ($29 + s/h for replacement)
To all those who see nothing but good ratings at the Compact Appl site: They refuse to post any of the real negative stuff. They fix the comment section to reflect only good reviews of 4 stars and more. Not too ethical, no?

(More customer reviews)I just got this item delivered yesterday on a hot, muggy 87 degree day and was so excited. Unfortunately when I unpacked the unit it appeared as though this might have been a repacked return, there was a broken wheel at the bottom of the box. Regardless I though, okay I can deal with a broken wheel since they do provide a replacement...I set it up and had it running and it seemed to be working alright. Today the hose portion of the unit that is screwed into the window venting panel has come "unglued" from the ring that holds it in place against the window vent. This is one day old, the unit hasn't been moved around a lot so it can't be that the hose was stretched and/or manipulated. I'm really disappointed so far...it isn't like this is some light weight item that can be shipped back easily and it isn't a cheap (price wise) product. I caution anyone else that has bought this or is considering buying this unit to shop around and read/post reviews. This product only had one "glowing" review when I purchased...

(More customer reviews)The unit measures 6 by 4.5 inches on the wall. The display alone measures approximately 3.5 by 2.5 inches. It's a little bit easier to read than some cell phone displays in the dark. Menu boxes line the bottom of the screen and other choices are on the left side of the display from top to bottom. It's easily to trigger a function unintentionally with a touch of the screen. Yesterday while measuring the display I accidentally turned off the heat. I noticed the situation just before going to bed and wondering why the house was getting chilly.
This thermostat, along with the new heat pump, keeps the house temperature more constant and even than the other thermostat did. Though the heat runs more often, we don't don't get those wild swings of temperatures and uncertainty about when the heat is going to cut on. It's also great to know that if the Honeywell says 68 degrees, you can be sure that 68 is the actual temperature.
Installation seemed easy for the installer who had the thermostat installed and programmed in about 15 minutes with no peeking at the installation guide. After my previous adventures in thermostat installation, I was more than happy to let someone else do it. Too many wires for me, and too many possibilities for disaster. The installation guide warns that only a trained professional must install this thermostat. I'd guess someone who is relatively handy could install this Honeywell without too much difficulty. Someone like myself, who can barely boil an egg, might create havoc.
I like that this thermostat is programmable for each day of the week. The only day I have to get early for work is Saturday, so that day is programmed differently than the other days. Overriding any programming is intuitive and quite easy.
To get a reminder to change the filter or battery, you must program the thermostat by inputting a time frame. For example, you could have the thermostat remind you to check the furnace filter every two months. I haven't bothered to take advantage of the reminder feature but probably should.
It's possible to set the thermostat to sense whether heat or A/C is needed for any particular day. I have that feature in my car, and actually prefer to set the thermostat myself on either heat or A/C.
One nice feature is the screen setting. Press screen to have thirty seconds for cleaning the screen. In this mode, there's no danger of turning off the heat or mistakenly changing any settings.
The entire unit pops off the wall smoothly, enabling one to comfortably sit in a chair while programming the thermostat or changing batteries.
There's even an option to buy remote units so that the user can see the outside temperature and/or the temperature in another part of the house by looking at the thermostat. We have no interest in this option. Finally
So far this has been a great thermostat that works well with our NuTone heat pump. It's wonderful to be able to set a given temperature for a specific morning time and wake up to that exact temperature every time. The thermostat learns how long it takes to reach that temperature and turns the heat on at the appropriate time before the target time. Amazing stuff.

(More customer reviews)I had not previously heard of this brand, but Amazon's great price made it hard to pass up. I purchased this generator for home emergency purposes. I Ordered it on Sunday night and received it on the following Thursday. There was no visual damage to the box that would indicate rough handling by the shipper. However, upon removing the generator from the box there was minor damage to a couple of items (nothing that would prevent operation). I called the manufacturer and the representative politely agreed to replace the items.
The generator does not come with a battery for the electric starter. The manufacturer's representative stated that it required an Everstart ES12N94B1 battery, which I found at Wal-mart. After adding oil and a little gas the generator started right up with only three easy pulls (I had not installed the battery at that point). The generator started so easy, in fact, that I am considering taking the battery back and not using the electric starter. This generator appears to be of good quality and at this point I am completely satisfied with the product.

However, when you move into a condo with all kinds of restrictions about what can be visible from the exterior or constraints on the architectural structure, then the portable is the best answer.
I have owned 4 of these and three different brands. My condo has three separate major spaces, 2 smaller for bedroom suite and office/den. The main living space is larger than the max recommended for any 120 volt unit, and that is where I now have the Soleus LX140.
The two smaller spaces are cooled with GE 10,000 BTU units that I have had for 5 years. HE quit making these units the year after I bought them They are quiet and have held up and keep the spaces in the upper 70s when the ambient temperature is in the mid 90s.
I used to have and Edgestar in the main space. I live in the Seattle area so only need the cooling about 2 months a year, and then not every day. The Edgestar was the worst unit I have ever owned. It was the noisiest unit and it quit in the middle of the second season. I called the manufacturer in Texas and they said it only had a 90 day warranty. They also said they had no service reps in the Pacific NW and couldn't help. After lengthy searching, I found one person who said they fixed them. After spending over $300, it still didn't work. The service tech said he would take it to the shop and return it in "New Condition." That was a year ago and I have never seen him or the unit again.
So I bought the Soleus. I found a dealer in Portland where I knew I could get to if needed. The manufacturer is in California, I can get there pretty easily too. Also, the Soleus has a 1 year warranty. I ordered the unit and it was delivered in 7 days. I set it up immediately but found that you had to use the remote to turn on the fan oscillator. It had to be the receiver or the transmitter, but I didn't know how to tell. I called the dealer, and within a few hours I got a call back from the manufacturer. They said they would send a new remote. If it still didn't work, they would send a label and an RMA. I got the remote in three days and everything worked.
The Soleus runs about 10 db quieter than the Edgstar. My main living space has 594 square feet and with partial cathedral ceilings about 5565 cubic feet. I am on the top floor, facing southwest with ceiling to floor glass across the entire space. Without any AC, the space has reached 110 degrees when it was 95 outside in the late afternoon. Also, there are no opening windows or sliding doors, so I am venting the unit up the fire place flu.
One week we had three days in the 90's. When it reached 98 degrees outside, the Soleus kept the space at 81. When the temperature reached 85 today, the Soleus kept the space in the mid 70s.
CONS: The only con I have at this point is that the fan oscillation is vertical instead of side to side.
The next test will be longevity as to how long it will hold up. However, at this time, the Soleus LX140 has proven to be the best unit of its type that I have used and I am very impressed with the technical service assistance of the manufacturer.

It has no "bells and whistles" as you'd expect for the price. Only thing I did not like is that the slide switch for Heat-Off-Cool is quite small and it's not always obvious at which position it's set.

Though it was very heavy and hard to move, unless you are on a hard floor where the casters can work, I managed to get it all hooked up. Things went well for the first couple of weeks and then I don't know what happened, but every morning that I use it I find that the little tray that sits underneath the unit and catches the water, when you open the drain plug, is filled to overflowing and I must empty it and wipe up the floor around it. This happens whether I have the little rubber plug they supplied pushed into the hole or I have the screw on plug put on as it seems to leak from underneath the unit itself. I am very happy that I was sort of forced into putting it in a room that had a vinyl floor!
I have tried emptying the accumulated water before retiring and leaving it unemptied - neither works. I called Soleus and was put on hold - they said I was 9th in line and would be on hold for about 11 minutes; about 40 minutes later a man came on to tell me that they would call me back; that was a week ago! I turned the unit over to see if I could gain access to the inside and see what was up, but that didn't work either.
I hesitate to return it as I was barely able to get it from my porch to where I wanted it and I know I couldn't get it into a vehicle to send it back; not to mention that the packaging is gone and that it cost me $60.00 to have it sent and would be near that to return it. I guess I have resigned myself to cleaning up after it each morning.

(More customer reviews)We LOVE this product. My husband was leery at first, and concerned what company would think when they came over and used the commode, but he quickly got over that. Product was easy enough for me to install, only problems were old hardware in my apartment...nothing to do with bidet. The instructions were sparse but not really necessary for installation.
My only gripe is that we do not use the warm water option. It takes a minute or two of running the water in the faucet before it warms up for the bidet, so it is kind of time consuming and wasteful to use it and there is still an initial "shot" of cool water to get the warm water moving down the line. When we move into a home and have a larger bathroom I probably will not even bother installing the warm water line. It works now because my restroom is really small so you do not really notice the line running from the toilet to the cabinet under the sink.
My husband did say the other day he had to "go" at work and was disappointed that there was only paper to use. Many of our guests have expressed interest in purchasing one for their home as well. My five year old son has become a professional, let me tell you it has helped his hygiene a great deal.
Overall this is a great product. I got it for a reasonable price and cannot imagine life without it.

(More customer reviews)The heater itself seems well-made and runs well and heats nicely. It's quiet and retains heat. We replaced an older hydronic unit that died, and this is working well so far.
One big advantage to this unit if you are replacing an old one is the fact that this one can be wired from either the left or right end -- wherever the wire already is. This was probably the biggest selling point for this heater, as we were replacing an old Isotherm (now Cadet) that was wired on the right -- the new Cadets are wired only on the left and we didn't want to have to deal with the complication.
The color is called "Navajo White" and the pictures look fairly white. In reality, the color is more of a light taupe. This was fine for our decor, but don't expect a true white or even an off-white.
When ordering, note that you must also order a thermostat -- there are ones that go on the end of the unit, ones that go on the wall, and ones that go on the wall and will control several baseboard heaters in one room. If you are replacing an existing heater and don't want to either fish wires or do drywall work, be sure to get the type that goes on the end of the unit. Whatever type you get, you must install the thermostat yourself -- it does not come pre-installed.
I'll preface my installation comments by saying that we are typical homeowners, not contractors or otherwise in the building trades. It was the first time my husband did a project like this, but he's reasonably handy. First off, the installation instructions that are included are hard to follow -- they assume a level of expertise we didn't have. However, on the QMark (Marley) web site, if you go to Heaters/HBB Baseboard Heaters, they have a much better .pdf file with photos of all the wiring. It still isn't perfect, but it's a lot better. My husband also commented that calling the junction box "roomy" is a matter of opinion, and while he found it tight, it was sufficient.
The biggest problem is mounting the unit to the wall. You must drill through the back of the heater (the holes are not predrilled) and then screw the heater to the wall (into studs). It's hard to do this without bending the fins on the heater (it's not catastrophic, but better for heat distribution if they're not bent). As every installation is somewhat different, screws are not included -- depending on your application, you may need screws, molly bolts, masonry screws or something else. Be sure to get these before starting the installation.
Also note that you'll need several wire nuts -- you can get them while waiting for the shipment. You need at least two of the type for connecting 2 wires.
It took Dave about 5 hours to install the heater, from unboxing it and removing the old heater to having the new one heating the room. He used a thermostat that went right on the heater. Admittedly, his total time included just under an hour to go buy some wire nuts. If you are more experienced in this type of project, it would probably take less time.
Overall, we're happy with the heater and would buy it again.

(More customer reviews)I have lower water pressure (about 62 psi) and tested many lower flow, mater amping shower heads. Alsons makes many of these with the big companies putting their names on them. This is the same technology as the Delta 1.6 but cosmetically different. You can find the Peerless in the Wal mart around me.
This head put the most pressure out for the money. Nearly 15-21 psi more than the 2.5 gpm heads!
It does use less water than a 2.5 and gives a pretty decent shower. It will be more than enough to blast soap and conditioner off of your body and hair.
The large hole will make it less likely to clog if you have hard water. The action is more like a side to side shake combined with a pulse so you get body coverage with force.
This is different than what you might be used to since it is not a needle spray but larger drops of water. Some think these mist but I do not see that effect. It does spray different than what most have so takes a few showers to really know if you like this way of presenting water to your body.
It s one draw back is that it might have to much force. I am male and my first thought was it was good but mixed with little stings mixed in. However I do think in a week your body would get used to it.
For the low cost if you are looking to boost pressure and save water, you should try this by going to your local store and seeing if you can find it to try it out.
If you want to spend about $24 you can buy from Amazon the 1.6 version by Alsons with 4 holes that use this technology. Over all it solves all the issues. It will give you wider coverage, and the pressure is divided between all 4 holes. You do get about 10 psi LESS pressure because of the 4 holes so there is no sting. For some reason that one uses a little more water even though they are both 1.6 rated.
If looking for low cost, lower water use, high pressure, this one is hard to beat for the money.

We ordered this NEW portable air conditioner from Air & Water, Inc. and when we finally received the item it was a USED air conditioner. The air intake panels were covered in a thick layer of dust which indicates it has had considerable use. There was also no documentation with this item...no owners manual, no warranty card, nothing. When we contacted this company, they refused to reimburse us for the $39.95 shipping charge we paid to have the item shipped to us, they also refused to cover the return shipping charge and they intend to charge us a 15% restocking fee which amounts to $59.85. This means we now have a choice of paying for a new air conditioner but keeping this used one which may or may not even work or pay $139.75 for absolutely nothing. In my opinion, this company is scamming people and should be prosecuted! BEWARE!
